Yeah, good question. For some reason many ppl don't seem to see the beauty in this unique movie, which is a great pity :-/ Well, it's their loss.

reply

I totally agree. It seems like not many people have seen this film. But it's my favorite film of the entire 1980s! Right up there with River's Edge, easily! So at least someone likes it...

i bet you have no more friends than an alarm clock

Ever since I first saw this movie some 20 years ago it has kept a place inside my mind, you have that with certain movies, because of the impact they have and they therefore frighten you. In this case it is the ease with which violence evolves out of anger, it seems almost causal, natural if you will. We all know anger but we don't let that slide into violence but it is easy to imagine that it could if we did not have that moral threshold. That is what this movie, among others, made me aware of and that's why it stuck in my mind. I surely think it is underestimated.
In a way it reminds me of Midnight Cowboy and also Taxi Driver.

I greatly appretiated this movie when I first saw it over 10 years ago.
This kind of movies have a restricted audience and are more likely to satisfy people who also enjoyed the black humour of masterpieces like:
"miami blue" (also grealtly underestimated)
and the surprizing belgian movie:
"Man bites dog".

This is a great movie, one of my favorites from the 80's. I highly recommend it.

"They lock us up on Monday pal."

This film is fantastic. One of the best I see in all my life. I'll never forget it.

"We only give her two seconds of pain, while girls like her give us eighteen years of pain."

reply

Get out of here. This is nowhere near the level of TAXI DRIVER. In fact, there are college student films that have more maturity than this drivel. There's no complexity to this film, everything is either hit-with-a-hammer obvious or knee-jerk pop psychology. That's why no one needs to be talking about this movie, as it fades into the obscurity it richly deserves.

I saw this movie in 2001.I'm only 19 years old so i guess i get a break :)
When i saw it,i was captivated by it,i'm glad i taped it.The possible reality of the whole movie was brilliant...and the personality of Bo and Roy was magnificent, they captured the minds of teenage psychopaths very effectively.
I rate this movie a 10 & a 1/2
I look forward to buying it on DVD this xmas....hopefully ;)

reply

I saw it in 88 and I love it.

Bo is a delinquent, Roy is a psychopath, Bo is still immature and can't see that Roy's sociaopathic behavior is more than teen delinquent destructiveness. The violence gets greater after each act and Roy is fully in control where I had to feel bad for Bo since you can see that he was truly too young and stupid to understand what was going on. Truly a great film, very deep.

reply

Well put, Dave. I agree that the acting performances really added a lot of depth to this film. Maybe the story wasn't full of the depth, but how the actors executed the script... seemed very real to me. A certain dryness, ho-hum boredom of everyday life, people feeling ignored by society. That is very real. The prejudiced cop who keeps using insensitive words to describe the crime. The guy in the hospital room solely centered on his little universe, his game show, and nothing else. What a selfish loser! And you know what, the world is full of jerks like these guys. The film shows the hard facts and it isn't easy to watch. People want a happy end. Tough crap. You don't get one here. But that is more true to real life.
But I still find the film entertaining and I also like both of the leading characters and I think they did a fantastic job of making this film watchable. An amazing thing is that this film keeps the pace going all the way to the end.

THIS FILM ROCKS!!! Maxwell and charlie are superb! Ive heard on the directors commentry(on the DVD)that nicholas cage was offered the part of "roy" and he now regrets not doing it.

reply

You cant get the DVD here in england (Only video if you're lucky) but I managed to pick up a copy when I visited Florida last year..
Definitely an underated film... I'm not sure if Cage could do Roy justice though, although having him headline the film would have increased its profile...

reply

Got my dvd copy sent from canada.ive had the ex-rental tape for 10 years and its getting grainy. I dont know if cage would of changed anything,i mean he wasnt big then, think maxwell is good enough anyway.
The whole reason i purchased the film 10 years ago was i collect sheens films and when i watched it i thought it was amazing!

I think Maxwell was best for the job,i cant imagine Cage doing it..
This film was definitely brilliant, but unfortunately yes underrated.
It should be remade with the same '84 theme.

"Ich frage euch: Wollt ihr den totalen Krieg?"

reply

I also can't imagine Cage doing this, but back then, he was also younger, so maybe he could have pulled it off. I think his acting skills have gotten better with time. But Caulfield did an excellent job, really.

reply

I gave it 10 as well. I was captivated the whole time.. It's criminal it got 6.5
I just discovered it weird as well, because I thought I've seen everything from the 80's Bad Boys, Class of 84', Suburbia etc..

"The Boys Next Door" is one of the best, most brutal and unflinchingly honest cinematic explorations of seething adolescent angst, rage and nihilism ever made. Charlie Sheen and Maxwell Caulfield are outstanding as the apathetic main characters. Moreover, I give the film bonus points for its hauntingly downbeat and depressing ending. It's a truly great movie that deserves to be better known and more widely seen. I give it a 9 out of 10 and have submitted a highly favorable comment on the film. Moreover, I included this picture in a two part article on killer kid movies I wrote for "Screem" magazine.

I'm glad you liked the movie. Not quite as good but still worth seeing is "The Young Warriors". Hard to find, though.

I just watched The Boys Next Door for the first time last night. I really liked it. It was shocking and compelling and haunted me all day today at work. Good stuff. Made me wanna dig out my old Cramps records.
