Throw the ball at Milly's face. I never really understood that part of the movie. I mean, it's not like Eric and Milly were bothering her in any way, shape or form. She must have thrown that ball really hard because it was a bouncy ball, and usually those don't do much damage. I couldn't stand the girl bully's face. Anyone else agree?

Milly gives her the ball and says "Take this, and throw it as hard as you can at my face."
She did that because she wanted Eric to catch it before it hit her, which he didn't.
A few scenes before that Eric and Milly were at the park, and a baseball game was going on nearby. Well the baseball suddenly came flying over and was about to hit Milly in the head, but Eric happened to see it coming and caught the baseball just before it hit her.
Then in a later scene, Eric and Milly are in the gym and Milly was trying to show everyone that he can now catch a ball. But he wouldn't this time. So Milly got the idea that if Eric saw another ball coming at her, he'd reach out and catch it again. So she went over and gave the ball to the mean girl and asked her to throw it as hard as she could at her face, thinking Eric would catch it and would prove to everyone that he can now catch a ball.
Well this time he wouldn't catch it....so the ball hits her right in the face giving her a black eye.
And it was a volleyball, which would hurt more than a softer one. LOL!

I think also that Eric knew that Milly planned the ball throw to her eye in the gym and he probably realized why should I save you from your own doing?
At the park it was a different story. Milly wasn't expecting this and was in danger so Eric caught it to protect her.
This may or may not be true but Eric's autistic mind could have worked that way.
