The ending reminded me of.....[SPOILERS]

.... The Wizard of Oz.
In both movies the main character wakes up at the end, we see almost every character in the last scene but in a different setting, and the audience can choose: was it all a dream? Or not?

I personally believe that Blue Velvet is a dream for a few reasons:
- Jeffrey tells Sandy that he loves mystery stories, but as we see at the end, Lumberton is a pretty uneventful town where you never even hear about those kind of situations.

- Paul is seen at the end whit Jeffrey's father and they both look happy.
This couldn't be possible as Paul was in Frank's circle of people during the "car ride" scene.

- Dreams are often mentioned during the film; Both Sandy and Frank do a speech talking about dreams, and the song that Ben lip syncs is called "In Dreams".

The whole ending is just perfect. I thought of the Wizard of Oz too!

The climax at Dorothy's apartment reminded me of the ending in the basement in Silence of the Lambs.

Lynch is apparently a huge fan The Wizard of Oz, so this makes sense.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

That was Sandy's father, not Paul, with Jeffrey's dad at the end.

Taxi Driver (1976).
He's going there to 'rescue' someone. And there's also a shoot-out, but all ends well.

That was not Paul, but Jeffrey's Dad who recovered from the hospital. I think you're putting too much into it.

... and the woman´s name is Dorothy...

Wow, i don't know how i forgot that.

Btw, i re-watched Mulholland Drive yesterday after a long time, and the ending was even more similar to the Wizard of Oz.
A also read that Wild at Heart has a Wizard of Oz vibe.....

At this point i think it's not even a theory anymore, David Lynch loves the Wizard of Oz, and he paid homage in a lot of his works.
After all it's very common for a director to reference his/her favorite movies.
