Question about one of the final scenes (spoilers)

Jeffrey walks into Dorothy's apt to find a zombified Yellow man and a dead Van Gogh. What exactly happened there? Supposedly Frank shot the yellow man (according to wiki and other various sources) but we never get a full explanation. I'm guessing Lynch had more info on his 4 hr version. For now, I'll go with Frank shot and killed the husband and almost murdered yellow man because...oh yeah...he's a *beep* psycho

I could be wrong but I doubt Lynch himself intended to shed some light on this. That scene always confused me probably more than any other in the film, but Frank being batshit crazy is a good enough explanation.
