Why no flash forward to the lawyer's office in the end?

I love this film, but thought there should be a scene in the lawyers office after Jack leaves the restaurant and before the last truck driving scene, without it, why even have the scene at the first? (I know the studio made them shoot it.)

It's not important if you shoot Digital or Film just as long as there is the freedom to choose

From what I heard, John Carpenter wanted to do a sequel with Kurt Russell, which never came to light, hence the cliffhanger ending.
