Would it have been better if (spoilers)

If it wasn't all a prank?

Y'know, I could eat a peach for hours

Definitely different. The prank aspect made this film unique. It is probably most memorable due to that.

I liked the ending.

Better? I don't know. I don't think it would have made the film worse, but it would have made it another generic slasher film. The prank twist is certainly refreshing.

Agreed.

See that's what I liked about it and some people didn't.At the time this was made it was original. They went into a different direction that the slasher film genre wouldn't do at the time.I thought it was great at the time because it tricked us.Another film that kind of did that as well even though it is not a slasher film was Body Double. The whole time you thought you were watching one thing and then it became something else.

The prank was the twist that made it different than other 80s slasher films. While to some degree it does feel like we got cheated, but the film would be the same until the reveal.

reply

I never felt cheated by this film.

Though I was too young to be allowed to watch horror films in 1986, I am a fan of 1980s horror generally.

Maybe if I saw it in the cinema in 1986 I'd have felt tricked. Watching it for the first time in 2013, I guessed the twist before I'd even watched it. Maybe it's just you needed to watch it at the time of it's release to understand the feeling towards it.

As it stands, I liked the ending.

If everyone actually died, "April Fool's Day" wouldn't be the beloved cult movie that it's become, it'd just be another in a long line of mostly-forgotten '80s slashers. The twist is what makes the movie special and has helped it endure for 30 years. I mean, in 2038, nobody's gonna be talking about the godawful remake!

reply

We might, but only for its hilariously terrible ending. And maybe as a footnote in Scout Taylor Compton's not-so-stellar Scream Queen career

It'd be different, and not necessarily bad, but I actually really liked the prank ending. I thought it suited the lighthearted tone of the movie. Plus, I liked the characters in this, so them actually living is always nice

I think this would be far less remembered without it though. The twist is what really helps it stand out

It should've had another twist to make up for the predictable twist that it was all a prank.
