Too many assumptions...

Okay, I haven't seen this thing in forever and only stumbled across it by accident. As I recall, though, they never actually said where the androids (too human-like for robots, and no human parts to make them cyborgs) actually came from. Nothing actually said they were alien, or from the future, or just a secret government experiment gone out of control.

The big mystery in the beginning happened when the girlfriend's plane (the protagonist had received tickets for a free vacation from a "contest" he didn't remember entering, if I recall correctly, and he couldn't go because of work, so the gf went with her bff) mysteriously disappeared off the radar for a period of time. LOTS of different and ominous explanations are possible for that.

For my two cents, they should have kept going and made it a series. Back in the 80s, this had some serious potential. They could try to make a more modern remake, but I think between all the Terminator movies and the Robocop remake, plus all the drek sci-fi movies that have been put out lately, they'd have a difficult time finding an audience.
