"Van Leuwen, why don't you just check out LV-426?"

That is a line that I find strange.

Not long before that, Ripley warned the board that there were thousands of eggs in the derelict spacecraft.

Surely she would be warning them to stay the hell away from LV-426?

I think that was her frustration talking. After all she was grilled for hours and hours, she had to relive and retell her story again and again and again - which is bad enough, but the suits were constantly harrassing her about it. So I think it's understandable, given what she was going through.

Speculation: Had Van Leuwen agreed, she would have been taken aback a bit, and then would have quickly regained her composure. And would have immediately given specific instructions. Like don't go into the derelict, just inspect it from the outside, take a lot of explosives, set them up outside, then remotely activate... Then nuke the site from orbit... And of course film the whole thing and bring the footage to her as proof so she can finally sleep well.

That's how I see that moment. Apart from setting up the surprise for the audience that there is a colony there already of course.

Yes, no one thinks straight all of the time, especially under stress.

I find it strange that Sigourney Weaver didn't object to this line either.

reply

I dont think the line is out of place at all.
They are flatly refusing to believe the facts of the matter.

Its like a soldier saying "You dont believe theres a sniper out there? well stick your head above the parapet and see what happens!"

I guess she then would advise all the safety tactics sati suggested.

The only problem with the whole thing is that proving this alien exists gives the company another chance to go bring it back to play with.

reply

"Because I don't have to. There have been people there for over twenty years and they never complained about any hostile organisms"

reply

You wouldn't necessarily have to land and actually go around walking. You could enter orbit and use satellite imaging to at least verify the existence of the derelict spacecraft.

reply

... and then nuke it from orbit, its the only way to be sure.
