Why is Hudson a fan-favorite?

He's an insufferable douchebag! And Bill Paxton (RIP)'s performance is so over the top it belongs to an 80s B-movie

reply

Apsolutely. He is no soldier at all.
He as just bitching all he time. Only after Ripley tell him to STFU,he did.

He was also annoying as hell.

reply

Actually, bitching is a standard pastime for soldiers.

reply

No it's not.
Bitching can only bring nervous into another soldiers and people around.
Soldiers are tough, quiet and deadly. Like Hicks.

reply

Maybe in movies.

reply

Beware of quiet ones.

reply

You have 100% for sure not been in the military; Philhelm is 100% correct; bitching is a pastime for soldiers. There is an old saying "if Marines are not complaining, something is fucked up".

reply

Ex-Army, can confirm.

reply

I agree with you. Seeing Bill Paxton in this after Weird Science, I absolutely despised him as an actor because I loathed both those characters.

reply

I have the opposite opinion (surprise!).

I generally don't like Bill Paxton as an actor but I love the Hudson character.

Why? Because a movie like this needs an "audience" character. A character who isn't perfect but can embody how totally FUBAR the situation is. In "Alien" that was Lambert. In Aliens, it's Hudson. And he gets so many of the best lines: "Game over man" "That's just great man. What the F are we supposed to do now?" "Why don't you put [Newt] in charge?"

reply

Excellent reply! 100percent agree.

reply

“Idk if you’re up on current events but we just our asses kicked out there!”

reply

Ripley : They cut the power.
Private Hudson : What do you mean *they* cut the power? How could they cut the power, man? They're animals!

Private Frost : Hot as hell in here.
Private Hudson : Yeah man, but it's a dry heat!

Private Hudson : Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen!

Private Hudson : Seventeen *days*? Hey man, I don't wanna rain on your parade, but we're not gonna last seventeen hours! Those things are gonna come in here just like they did before. And they're gonna come in here...
Ripley : Hudson!
Private Hudson : ...and they're gonna come in here AND THEY'RE GONNA GET US!

Private Hudson : I'm ready, man, check it out. I am the *ultimate* badass! State of the badass art! You do not wanna fuck with me. Check it out! Hey Ripley, don't worry. Me and my squad of ultimate badasses will protect you! Check it out! Independently targeting particle beam phalanx. Vwap! Fry half a city with this puppy. We got tactical smart missiles, phased plasma pulse rifles, RPGs, we got sonic electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks...

reply

Late reply but the next exchange HAS to be included:

Private Hudson : Seventeen *days*? Hey man, I don't wanna rain on your parade, but we're not gonna last seventeen hours! Those things are gonna come in here just like they did before. And they're gonna come in here...
Ripley : Hudson!
Private Hudson : ...and they're gonna come in here AND THEY'RE GONNA GET US!

Ripley : This little girl survived longer than that with no weapons and no training, right?

[Newt salutes]

Private Hudson : Whyncha put HER in charge?!?

I saw this opening night and that line brought down the house.

THAT's why Hudson's a fan favorite. He's funny BECAUSE of all his faults, yet still fights like a marine when the chips are down.

reply

Exactly the right answer! I read an interview with Bill Paxton a few weeks ago about how he got the job and how he understood the character of Hudson, and what he tried to do with it, and this is exactly it.

reply

It's not difficult to see why he's a well liked character. He has a number of funny, memorable lines and for all of his whining & complaining, in the end he dies heroically.

Interestingly I recall an interview where Bill Paxton himself was explaining that while filming he expected Hudson to be the character that the audience completely hated.

reply

HUDSON IS MY GUY,SINCE I FIRST SAW THIS WHEN I WAS A BOY.

reply

I was annoyed by him but at the same he amused me and I wanted him to make it thru.

reply

In any group, you have "that one". The odd one who can't quite fit in.

I loved him in this.

reply

Hudson's courage is a mile wide, but an inch thick. He's OK as long as things are going well, but he's not a natural born leader. If Hicks had remained a whiner throughout I don't think he'd be nearly as well liked today. To Cameron's credit, he let Hudson go out a hero. Conversely, Burke was a slime bag from the beginning, and he died as a weasel. The audience was glad to see him get his comeuppance.
