I agree with you. Seeing Bill Paxton in this after Weird Science, I absolutely despised him as an actor because I loathed both those characters.

I generally don't like Bill Paxton as an actor but I love the Hudson character.
Why? Because a movie like this needs an "audience" character. A character who isn't perfect but can embody how totally FUBAR the situation is. In "Alien" that was Lambert. In Aliens, it's Hudson. And he gets so many of the best lines: "Game over man" "That's just great man. What the F are we supposed to do now?" "Why don't you put [Newt] in charge?"

Exactly the right answer! I read an interview with Bill Paxton a few weeks ago about how he got the job and how he understood the character of Hudson, and what he tried to do with it, and this is exactly it.
shareIt's not difficult to see why he's a well liked character. He has a number of funny, memorable lines and for all of his whining & complaining, in the end he dies heroically.
Interestingly I recall an interview where Bill Paxton himself was explaining that while filming he expected Hudson to be the character that the audience completely hated.

Hudson's courage is a mile wide, but an inch thick. He's OK as long as things are going well, but he's not a natural born leader. If Hicks had remained a whiner throughout I don't think he'd be nearly as well liked today. To Cameron's credit, he let Hudson go out a hero. Conversely, Burke was a slime bag from the beginning, and he died as a weasel. The audience was glad to see him get his comeuppance.
