Why is everyone bashing this suddenly?

I keep seeing people say it should have been Alien then into Alien 3 and skipping this one. Aliens is a classic. My favorite Alien movie, favorite extraterrestrial movie, favorite action movie, and next to Terminator 2, favorite science fiction movie. Alien was good but this just took everything to whole new level. And Alien 3 sucked! What is wrong with you people???

Very good question.

I seriously don't know. Even though I prefer Alien, this one was great! The only bad thing I can say abut this film, is that it lacked in suspense. But that's it. This film is a classic, and I seriously recommend it.

"Alien: Isolation" is to blame as it has brainwashed millions into this causal mindset. Regular Xenos are not Invincible not even Bulletproof! Amanda Ripley wasn't even a important character! Now the causal fans want a sequel with her meeting up with Ripley 8?!?!!?

Why should I care about crafting items & hiding underneath tables?! This isn't what Aliens nor even Prometheus is all about! You do know The Engineers want to destroy humanity?! Oh no they hate James Cameron Colonial Marines because "Alien: Isolation" got everything right about "Aliens"?!?!??

Go back to Minecraft if you want to craft things.

You gotta stay in your seats until the Sulaco reaches the terminal!

reply

Beats me. Aliens is a great movie, not quite as great as Alien but pretty close.

reply

It's cool to hate it now, as are most of James Cameron's movies because they are so successful.

Also, in order to justify their blind love for Prometheus and the trailer for Alien Covenant, a small minority have taken to bash Aliens as a means of making those two movies look good.

reply

Bashing Aliens = loss of all credibility

reply

A few outspoken folks bashing Aliens can't change the fact that Aliens sold 20.2 million tickets after its opening weekend...compared to the 8.7 million tickets sold after the opening weekend for Alien 3.

reply

Post-opening weekend ticket sales. All Alien films.

(in millions)
28.0 Alien
20.2 Aliens
8.7 Alien 3
6.8 Alien Resurrection
6.7 Alien Vs Predator
4.6 Aliens Vs Predator - Requiem
9.5 Prometheus

In other words...
48.2 million for the first two Alien films
36.3 million for the last five Alien films

reply

Post-opening weekend ticket sales. All Alien films.

(in millions)
28.0 Alien
20.2 Aliens
8.7 Alien 3

See, that right there... THAT is a compelling, relevant and important set of facts.
This is what your other threads should have focussed on.

reply

ticket sales are just votes from people who havent seen the film yet , so they only tell you how good the preceding film and/or the marketing is!

reply

...just a few outspoken folks who probably don't like what Alien 3 revealed about the first two Alien films.

Sure, those few outspoken folks might appear to be making a lot of noise, but the facts of greater significance speak louder. Facts like the post-opening weekend ticket sales of all seven Alien films...among other facts.

The title of this thread should be "Why are so many bashing Aliens suddenly?".

Correction.
You see one Troll, his buddy and several sock puppet accounts of the same person posting troll threads.

I am one of the guys who is suddenly bashing this movie. Am am surprised myself, because I loved it when I was younger. I think that Aliens does not hold up as well as Alien (1979). And as time moved on, Aliens looks dated, cheesy and (pardon) like a stupid action movie.

Edit: I like James Cameron and still love Terminator 2.

reply

I think Aliens LOOKS great. Whether you like the action or not, the look of the film has certainly held up... Thing is, there is almost no actual action in Aliens. Only a few scenes when it would be necessary. The film doesn't go out of its way to create ridiculous action scenarios. See, preferences change. Some people are saying *beep* this has action so it's a bad movie. That just means your preference has changed. The music, acting, effects.... all still great for the most part.

It is kind of cheesy in a way, but so is Alien... and every other film in the franchise really.

PS: thanks for presenting your point in a respectful way, and not just transforming into a troll like many posters with a clear agenda against the film.

I also want to thank you for not coming here to trash this movie. People who know me know I love Alien and Aliens and that I hate Alien3. But, because you appear to be a reasonable person, I'll share with you a couple of things that may shock people to know I actually like about Alien3. It's a good looking movie. Even though I dislike the movie, I have to admit I find it difficult to take my eyes off it. It's also well acted. Aside from the fact I find most of the characters hard to tell apart, they do a good job with the material they're given.

In my own little world, A3 never happened, Newt, Hicks and Ripley all made it back to Earth and lived happily ever after and never once encountered another monster for as long as they lived. Honestly, I could maybe live with Alien3 if it happened to someone else, though that whole "super egg" thing was a terrible idea. They would have to find another way to setup the movie. I know I'm living in denial but the rent is reasonable here. 

It all comes down to taste. For me personally, the style of Aliens does not work well with the original concept (as I see it/like it), which is the mysterious scary Alien. I would probably like Aliens more it it was just a different monster. Adding the Alien queen also damages the original mystery. I know it was a neat idea to explain the eggs, but then again, where was the alien queen on the ship in the first movie? And so on...

I like James Cameron and I like Alien, but now I feel like these two things don't work well for me personally in the year 2017. I loved it when I was younger. See my post "B-Movie?" for more explanations ;-)

So now you are going to hate me even more, but I started watching Alien 3 Assembly cut (first half) and I really liked it. :-)

reply

Why should I hate you for watching a movie you enjoy? Even though I don't like it, I don't take it as an insult when someone else does. I only take it as an insult when people (such as another user on another thread in this forum) make it sound as if it's somehow "smarter" to like only what they like.

reply

It’s not SUPPOSED to work with the original concept, which was a trite repetition of a the “trapped in a house with a monster” trope, set in space. Ripley was passive, and did a striptease at the end. Aliens was an action movie, and transformed Ripley into RIPLEY! Action Heroine!

I am with you in believing that Alien3 never happened and they all are living happy somewhere. However in my fantasy world, We never saw Hudson actually die, so he managed to escape and meet up with Hicks and they are going around battling aliens through the galaxy lol.

The only aspect of either that really hasn't aged well is the depiction of information technology and in that regard, Aliens is at least less egregiously retro than Alien. That isn't to bash either, because the IT is part of the awesome character and energy of the original two Alien films.

"Aliens does not hold up as well as Alien (1979)".

Agreed.

reply

And disagreed. I never had any respect for Alien.
