Aspect ratio?
Can anyone tell me the original aspect ratio of '84 Charing Cross Road'? I only seem to be able to find full screen DVD's.

It's flat widescreen - 1.85:1.
The R1 dvd is open-matte, with slight cropping from the sides & more picture top & bottom that was masked off in the cinema.
Here's a comparison. Fullscreen dvd vs my widescreen tv capture.

You can get the widescreen version (R2) from amazon.co.uk or play.com for about $8+p&p, if your dvd player can handle them.
My rental from netflix (USA) was wide screen

Good answer, however your DVD player must be able to handle both Region encoding as well as PAL format. The Region 2 (UK/Europe)is also a dual region release for Region 4 (Australia/New Zealand) as well.
Just watching the movie on FTA TV again (in Australia). The copy they are showing is "from the vaults", a cropped pan and scan version presented in 1.33:1 (Full frame). Wtahcing it again is a good reminder of just how with P&S/cropped versions can be. It's rather annoying watching the screen people speaking "off-camera" in the cropped sections. Thank heavens it is one of my favourite films, else I would have switched it off. (My ex-wife took custody of my excellent DVD version, but I kept the book).

Locked my wire coat-hanger in the car - good thing that I always carry spare keys in my pocket :)

I bought the widescreen version from iTunes after giving up getting a conventional version. I too could only find the butchered version for sale in North America.
