I think you might like The Remains of the Day. It meets all your criteria and has similar themes to 84 Charing Cross Road. I found it very moving and poignant. If I think of any others I'll post them.

Hi!
I just read your post and wanted to recommend to you a few of my favorite movies. They are low on flash, quiet and very satisfying:

Crossing Delancy*

Stanley and Iris*

Win Win*

About a Boy

The Apartment

Circle of Friends

The Goodbye Girl (the original with Richard Dreyfus)*

Hope and Glory

Jane Eyre (with Ciaran Hinds)

Lost in Translation

Murphy's Romance*

Persuasion (with Ciaran Hinds)

Six Degrees of Separation

Temple Grandin

* Particularly recommended

Mary and Max

it's a claymation of a similar topic--longtime pen pals

And my all-time favorite movie

Wings of Desire, which I note also came out in 1987, apparently a very good year for quiet, emotionally laden, beautiful films.

Diner (1982), Harold and Maude (1971), My Dinner with Andre (1981), Radio Days (1987), Return of The Secaucus Seven (1979), and Peter's Friends (1992 and a British film as well). and it's impossible to mention ROTSS and PF w/o mentioning The Big Chill (1983). I totally agree with The Remains of the Day, Breaking Away, and The Shop Around the Corner. might even add Dead Poet's Society (1989), The Night of the Hunter (1955), Gaslight (1944), Notorious (1946), Indiscreet (1958), The Country Girl (1954), Adam's Rib (1949), On Golden Pond (1981), Gideon's Trumpet (1980), and The Bells of St. Mary's (1945).
