WHAT'S YOUR RATING ?

mine - 7/10 - good, not great

reply

9/10 Great film! The only problem I had was that it was just a tad bit to long (I saw the directors cut mind you), but other than that I loved it.

reply

Mine - 10!
It's true. For me the best movie ever.Because it's genuine through ang through.
I never cared for films much until I saw that film.

reply

10/10

A cinematic masterpiece. A superb blend of comedy, erotica, romance and tragedy with an exceptional cast, director, writer, cinematographer, composer, etc. A must for all film lovers.

By the way, I love the length; it's a modern epic.

reply

I don't mind it's full version either, at least home, on TV.
When in cinema perhaps much better film 2 hour length.

6/10

good for a French film.

like all French movies, lacks social reality construction for a drama picture while lacking innovation for an avant garde.

Mr_Thomas_Anderson, you said "lacks social reality construction for a drama picture while lacking innovation for an avant garde." Wow, that's actually generally what I think about most American pictures. I, on the other hand, find French cinema to be quite superior to most industries out there. French films are filled with both artistic beauty and frankness, without the combination being muddy. Also, they are blessed with so many imaginative techniques. Anyway, that's just my opinion :)

reply

And mine - exactly.

reply

IMHO, French movies assume a pose of "artistic". or they attitudinize movies which are made with highly artistic concerns. but they actually just miss the point of art. which finds its meaning in communication. French movie makers have a common misconception that "if a movie is hard to understand only then it is artistic". on the contrary, best piece of art is the one which is understood most easily and by most people.

for the reality construction, while i'm watching a French movie -just like many- i "too often" ask the questions such as "why did s/he do that?", "so what?", or too often say to myself like "s/he shouldn't have to do that", "that is a generalization", "noone answers the questions of other characters, everybody talks to themselves". etc.

of course American movies also make the same mistakes sometimes. but they don't constitute a characteristic. in the other, most of the people who like watching movies characterizes French movies as they are just as i depicted.

you also know this is true.

regards...

Mr_Thomas_Anderson....with all do respect, I disagree. Am I saying that you are wrong? Absolutely not! We all have opinions and I find your point to be quite valid, for their are pretentious French productions out there, but at the same time I consider many of them to be honest masterpieces filled with creativity and originality, and accomplish exactly what they set out to do. I just don't think you should cast out all French films, like you said, "art is the one which is understood most easily and by most people." So what if a bunch of people don't understand a film, then it is simply a piece of art designed specifically for the select individuals who do appreciate it for what it is and wouldn't change for the world. Not everything is simple, and just because something is complicated doesn't make it overcooked or unworthy. It's just not for the simple crowd necessarily.

reply

9/10. Truly, a great film.

"She appeared like an angel. Out of this filthy mess, she is alone. They... cannot... touch... her."

reply

OK...OK you can say I have no reflection in the mirror but I found it tedious and found myself wishing someone would give Betty a slap and suggest that she grow up. I think the Betty character really caters to a male fantasy... A beautiful, rampantly sexual adult child! Big girls who suck their thumb or the their blankie just don't do it for me. 3/10

reply

I'm a female and I'd give this an 8 - I first saw it when I was about 12 and happened to catch it while flicking through the channels and of course started watching the opening sex scene! Since then, I've watched it several times and it remains to be one of my favouite French films of all time, although extremely depressing. Coming from someone who suffers from a mood disorder, albeit nowhere as extreme as Betty's, I can sympathise with both Betty and Zorg.

I'd say setting buildings alight, stabbing someone with a fork and running down the street in your underwear is a bit more than just having a hissy fit. I'm assuming she was bipolar but I don't know if any medical explanation has ever been offered by the director. Of course, if giving someone a slap and telling them to grow up worked wonders, it would certainly abolish the need for psychiatry and/or medication!

reply

Giver her slap and suggest that she grows up? She was mentally ill!!! Or do you usually go around slapping mentally ill people?

reply

Mentally ill? Yeah every *beep* has a mental illness these days. No I don't slap them but if I did I would claim I had a form of autism and that should see me in the clear. 😉

reply

This days? This movie was made 30 years ago, genius. Nice try though.

reply

Wow! Getting cranky on the internet because someone doesn't share your opinion. Life must be hard for you. But yeah the movie was made 30 years ago but today everyone has a mental illness or addiction. Still.... Nice that our hero was still prepared to boff our mentally ill Betty. I guess he was providing care in the community.

reply

"he was providing care in the community"
Wow, watch out guys, we got a badass over here.
Cause people that fake mental illness usually end up in a looney bin, right? You sure are a bright one.
And fact that you saw it 30 years ago doesn't change the fact that 1986 isn't "this days".

Oh and Lukas I saw the movie 30 years ago.

10/10

I saw it as a 20 year old young man in 1986 and I loved it. The filming, the scenery, the characteres, the seaside, the humour, the tradgedy and the MUSIC.

A perfect movie and a masterpiece!
