I agree! Sissy and Anne did wonderful jobs in this movie. I watch it everytime it airs on the digital drama channel. I have always liked Sissy any ways.

It is truly an amazing film. Everything about it is brilliant.

The chemistry and dialogue between Spacek and Bancroft is realistic and convincing.

I only wish I was able to see the play's initial run onstage.

At my college, where I am not an actor, but on fairly-good terms with the head of the theatre department, I suggested that the school should perform "'Night, Mother." Simply because, I'm told, the only way you can truly appreciate the work is to see it performed on stage.

Unfortunately, as this is a college (and a small college that can only afford to produce 2-3 plays a year), I am told that with their limited resources they can only perform ensemble pieces. The logic being that with the dozens of theatre majors and actors at my school, it would be improper to perform a play with only two characters and leave everyone in the theatre program on the sidelines.

On an similar note, while I enjoyed the movie, it is apparent that (like many, many stage plays before and since), what excels on the stage doesn't always transfer to the screen. Which is why I guess the play won a Pulitzer and the movie no one can see fit to give a DVD release.

That's just my two cents.

Wow! I was thinking of this, and just wanted to write how excellent a film can be with two main characters in it. Spacek and the late Bancroft make this a brilliant and moving Masterpiece.Your heart is slowly tearing apart, as the minutes trickle down to the climactic finale. You feel all the tension, emotion, and are dragged into the Psyche of a disturbed,self-pitying wife and mother.

You can almost feel sorry for, and not blame Jessie for what she ultimately does. She gets so hell-bent on throwing it all away, that You wish you could stand in front of her and knock Sense into her. With only dialogue to pull the film to its peak, you feel Thelma's Anguish at her loss for time.Spacek sets the pace of the "drum" and keeps the flow of the movie running.
