Let's talk about Sue

I love this movie first and foremost.

As a young man I never would have thought about this, but as an adult who's lived in the big city at one point, I have to mention this. First, Sue was dating Richard. That must be noted. She was on assignment and met MJCD on this trip, then decided to make a pass at him on the beach and they kiss. So she effectively forgot about Richard and cheated on him with MJCD.

She then returns to the U.S. with MJCD, presumably for the story to continue, but really it was for her own ends. She was confused and wanted to continue seeing (and presumably screwing) MJCD. Richard seems to have some reservations based on his tone about MJCD but goes along with it, even at dinner. Richard, trying to save face, does act like a total dueche at the dinner, and got owned by Dundee. Then Sue has the nerve to defend him in the cab and tell Dundee that she loves Richard.

Richard is notably absent at the party with the cocaine, as well as when they seem to be out on the town when he is about to get mugged. Once he saves her, again, she walks up to him and kisses him (and I assume they finish the night together). She is effectively cheating on Richard again and Dundee at the same time.

Richard asks for her hand in marriage despite all of this, and she accepts. Ridiculous in and of itself, she is not thinking about Richard when she accepts and still stares at MJCD.

Then she ups and leaves Richard altogether.

I get that minds and hearts change. And Richard wasn't altogether wonderful. But this is slutty behavior at its finest.

reply

Let’s not. She was the worst leading lady ever.

reply

Seriously?
Sounds like you have an agenda when this movie really wasn't aiming for one.

Sue obviously was against type as being different than Richard and their elite circle by being open minded and accepting of people that are a bit different. She saw the best in people..Even of Richard himself..

She and Croc did click and she had an attraction to him but just assumed it was one of those things and just chalked it up to a temporary attraction that wouldn't add up to anything permanent.
They were too different and Croc Dundee would be leaving soon enough anyway.
But neither one would admit to the other that it seemed to go deeper..until the end.

This was an innocent enough little movie and Sue was probably one of the least manipulative females ever brought to life. You don't have to turn her evil.
There's been tons of film with both male and females being conflicted romantically and far more manipulative. Go find one with male "slutty" behavior..

reply

Definitely a slut.

reply

Oh please, two men doesn't make you a slut! It makes you a shitty girlfriend, but to truly be called a slut a person has to have some real numbers.

And yeah, she's not a particularly likeable movie character, or someone that a lot of people would want to identify with. I still wonder why the character was written that way, although I have a pretty good idea why she was cast (married Hogan, divorced after 23 years).

reply

I liked her. For someone who was written as a spoiled, sheltered rich girl, she came across as amiable and sophisticated. And she wasn't a shitty girlfriend or a slut. Richard was an entitled asshole who assumed she was going to marry him, but after meeting Mick she began to see there was a better, nicer option than the arrogant stuffed-shirt yuppie who most likely saw marrying the boss's daughter as his path up the career ladder.

reply

It's nice that someone liked her character.

reply

Wasnt her bathing suit a little slutty? Lol.

reply

By today's standards, her bathing suit was modest to the point of frumpiness.

reply

Without women like Sue nobody would ever get laid.

reply

It's almost as if women can choose to do whatever they want!

reply

Hey!!

I think the OP is reading far too much into it, when you consider it follows a thousand or so films which also used the ‘torn between two lovers’ trope. If Sue wasn’t attached where is the conflict in the film? There needed to be an obstacle for them to overcome in order to realise their true feelings for each other. It’s close to the oldest trick in the book.

I thought Sue was likeable, adorable at points. Slut didn’t enter my mind until I read this post.

All I know is in my young days every single time I dated an attractive lady they always had a wandering eye amiright guys?

reply

Depends on the attractive lady sir. I know plenty of guys who chose their women strictly based on what their buddies would think, yet they spent a lot of time keeping these women interested because they had littlle in common. Guys would ask me out not having a clue what my interests were or what my dreams were. There are plenty of attractive women who don't have wandering eyes.
