This was the ONLY scene in the movie I didn't like. As I have become a big fan of crocodiles lately, I have done some major research on them. One thing's for sure, Sue would've been dragged in straight away. As if she could stay on the surface as a 4 metre croc was pulling her in! Don't you think that's a little...far fetched? lol
Never been outback thats obvious..Can tell you they are certainly found in fresh water [salty is just a nickname] they are estuarine crocodiles and I have seen many in very fresh clean water...
Of course the other thing is that "crocs" aren't in fresh water
There is actually. The really big ones are called 'salties' or saltwater crocs but that can be misleading as they are just as happy in freshwater as freshwater crocs are. Not saying this movie is correct in every way, its a movie after all but nothing stops a saltie from living in freshwater.

remember it was made in 86 when all they had was an robot head and tail to work with... dont like it much myself, but its understandable with the level of sppecial effects available.
If the croc would have lunged at her head instead of pulling on the canteen, she would have been a goner, too. That scene was far-fetched and just set up so Dundee could leap through the air and kill the savage croc with only his knife.
This film was geared for Americans. At the time what other pieces of Australiana were we exposed to? None that I can think of. This movie was my first introduction to Australia. I, of course, bought every single thing in it hook, line, and sinker.
Now, more than 20 years later, having lived here for 5+ years, I can tell you that Sue Charlton would have hardly known what hit her! No way would she have managed to stay upright for a second.
Yes, the scene was a gimmick so that Mick could rescue her. At the time, it completed it's task........everyone bought it.
I love this movie, regardless of it's inaccuracies and contradictions. As I said it was my first glimpse at the Land Down Under, and I was enthralled with the idea of it from that moment on.
I got the same impression. When the croc attacked the floating canteen she fell back, locked in her heels with her muscular legs spread and prevented the croc from dragging her in. No wonder she and Paul actually ended up married in real life.
"What other pieces of Australiana were we exposed to?"??? You must be a young one. How about: Mad Max (1979), Mad Max: The Road Warrior (1981), and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985). You might say we Americans were on an Australian movie binge when Croc Dundee came out in 1986. LoL
"I don't have to outrun that bear....I just have to outrun YOU!!"
Yah back then I had no clue Mel was Australian and I certainly didn't think of the Mad Max movies as being 'Australian', though they did kick ass. The Dundee movies are the first ones I remember seeing that were set in and about Australia. Oh and Quigley Down Under. Not even sure if The Man From Snowy River was actually supposed to be set in Oz, though it's an Australian movie.
The Man from Snowy River is set in Australia. The 70s and early 80s also gave us Breaker Morant, Razorback, Walkabout, Wake in Fright, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Gallipoli, and the Ned Kelley with Mick Jagger.
that scene scared the piss outta me as a kid. now i look at it and it makes me laugh at how fake it is. Normally, that croc would've done the death roll and sue would've been either choked by her canteen string or had her neck broken, and would've been disabled from moving. then the croc would've pulled her under, or he could've done that initially. he wouldn't have spent more than 2 seconds (or about 5 in the movie) struggling with an 120 pound set of cheeks. and then if he pulled her in, she would've drowned, and then 3 or 4 other crocs would've come, fighting for her body. in the end, Sue would've probably lost her limbs, head, and maybe breasts. then whoever has her chest and waist would try to cut it on a sharp rock and finish off the remainder of her body, or store it in a meat cache for later eating.
Reading this signature means i've had you under my control.
I saw it in the theater and that scene scared the living crap out of me, made me jump in my seat because I was never expecting it. It scared other people as well. The scene was actually very good in that it accomplished exactly what it intended to do which is scare the audience and have Mick save Sue.
Yes it was unrealistic in that she would have been dragged in by such a big croc ambushing her like that but the audience had to see Mick save a women being attacked by a giant croc in a movie called Crocodile Dundee.
Considering when this was made, I think the scene is pretty damn good. I like to think it was toying with her, but of course I can rationalize anything.
