Anybody know how Valerie died?

I thought she was killed in an airplane crash, but I thouth that would have been in a bad taste being the father was an airline head pilot.

Anyone know??

I thought it was a car crash. I was very young when this show aired, though.

Thanks, I thought so too, but I have heard the airplane crash theory. I always thought it was kind of weird how they kind of went on living without mourning her death or even talking about it every once in a while. A couple of Memories episodes would have been very touching.

Yeah I remember seeing a rerun a year or two ago, and someone else died (an older man... a friend/mentor maybe even a grandpa?) and the oldest son (David, was it?) was having a hard time with it and had a heart to heart with the dad and I couldn't believe they didn't even mention his mom died a couple years earlier! It seems like that would stir up a memory or something.

reply

I know what you mean but the writers just moved on after Valerie Harper left the show. I did not agree with that and felt that they would have touched on it as well but it has been so long since I have seen this show.

When ABC Family was showing it in the mornings a couple of years ago I was very happy about it and excited because I hate to say it but Valerie is one of these shows that goes unnoticed like many other shows that were good to watch.

It was definitely a car crash. I specifically remember them saying that on the show.

reply

Yes you are correct about the car accident that kills her because I remember seeing that when the show was originally on and I caught this when ABC Family was showing this 3 years ago.

I was so happy and excited to see ABC Family start to air this and I was watcing it when it was on in the mornings. Then ABC Family pulled it off the programming and I was pissed about it!

I emailed ABC Family to show it again and they did not.

I liked ABC Family when it was known as The Family Channel before it became FOX Family and then converted to ABC Family. Some of the programming is not all that bad to be honest with you but they should have kept The Hogans on there though. That was a very good family show to watch and I do not think ABC Family knows a good family show if it bite them in the butt!

There was actually an episode where Jason Bateman's character runs into the house, there is a fire, to get a family photo and there is a moment about his mother's death and dealing with it.

reply

In which episode did someone first mention how she died?

Why did Harper think the use of an old photograph of Mrs. Hogan was a ploy to make us think she was still on the show, or a wrongful attempt to exploit her, after what she proved to have been a wrongful termination? Maybe the title Valerie's Family was, but don't real bereaved families display pictures of a deceased spouse/parent--especially after a fatal accident in the prime of his/her life? What kind of husband and children would they have been if they had forgotten her?

I sincerely hope you are kidding -- that was David's friend Rich. (the blonde)

If I remember correctly (and I may not, seeing as it was so long ago), the original plan was to have Valerie die in a plane crash. I seem to remember reading this in an article during the summer, before the fall season began, that she would be killed off in a plane crash. It was later changed to a car crash because it would have been too weird to have her husband continue being a pilot after that.

what was the episode called?

"Movin' On" (first episode of Season 3): The dad is returning to work and says "It's the first time I've left the boys since Val's automobile accident." Watch it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uRoJ9urW3g&feature=related

Did they ever go into more detail about the crash in future episodes? Like - where she was going, if she was in the car alone or with someone else, did she die right away or suffer.... did they say anything more about it, or did they just say "car accident" and leave it at that?

reply

Yep. She died in a car accident. Like the mom from Full House.

I think one of the only times they really mentioned about how much they were affected by it was the episode 'Burned Out'. The house caught fire and Jason Bateman's character went into what was left of his room and found a burned up picture of his mom and just bawled like a baby. It was depressing.

reply

I always thought she died in a house fire.

reply

If I remember correctly, it was a car crash and season 3 starts off six months after the accident.

reply

You are correct j_grae, it was a house fire.

reply

holy crap it wasn't a fire!!! They had the fire in the attic when they were spring cleaning up there and started reminicing. one of the twins found a lamp that they had made in Shop and plugged it in. They went downstairs a few minutes later and forgot about the lamp. The lamp ignites and ...

THis was a SANDY episode... sandy came after Valerie had died.

You are probably confused with the aftermath of the fire... David enters his embered room and looks around, he is about to leave when he sees the burnt remainder of something in a picture frame, by his bed... he crumpled the burnt paper and cried... I always thought it was a picture of his mother.

(my stupid mother thinks it was his diploma!)

She died as a result of a car accident. Some say it was a drunk driver but I don't believe that it was ever stated. The mother on Full House was said to be killed by a drunk driver.
