Commercial: Vote for the show's new name

I was very young when this show aired but I specifically remember when they were going to change it from Valerie's Family to The Hogan Family, there was some kind of promo commercial aired with a "What do you think the new name should be?" A B or C Multiple choice question. I don't know if it was for actual call-in voting, or just kind of a promo gag. I think one of the other choices was "The Hogans". Does anyone else remember this?

I was talking with my mother about the show and she insisted it was always called Valerie's Family before it was called The Hogan Family, and she didn't believe me that it was originally called Valerie! I'm not sure why I remember, I was probably like 3. Anyway. :)

Now I remember when the show first started and it was called Valerie due to the main actress who was Valerie Harper at the time. Then once Valerie was killed off from the show it was called The Hogans, and then eventually known I think as The Hogan Family.

Tha is all I know and can remember because I loved watching this show when it was on and I am the same age as Jason Bateman and the other two actors who played the twins.

That commercial was what made me look this show up. I think it was really the only thing I remembered about the show. Jason Bateman did it and he asked people to vote. I think it was just a promo thing though.

The commercial, which originally aired during the last episode on NBC under the " Valerie's Family / The Hogans " title, asked people to either phone in with their vote ( if I remember that correctly ) to a bogus phone number, or to mail in their vote to a fictitious address that was due the day before this commercial aired.

The A,B,C options were all " The Hogan family ". The " Name Game " song was used in the commercial.

As for what Jason Bateman did, remains unclear to me. I will go ahead & see if I can find the tape in which this commercial appears. I know I have it somewhere.

It may take a while, but I'll put it on my to do list.

Thanks,

I understand why they changed the name of the show from Valerie to The Hogans but why change it for the third time then to The Hogan Family? Was it to draw attention to the viewers to think it was a new show once it moved to CBS?

That is another show that moved from NBC to CBS. That does not make any sense at all. Plus, when it moved from NBC to CBS they moved it to a time slot that I watched another show and did not realize that The Hogans was still on.

That is a part of the reason I stopped watching the show was due to switching networks and placing it in a different time slot.

I don't even remember a network switch, but it's my understanding that it was Valerie, then Valerie's Family, then The Hogan Family. It was also called The Hogans?? It was first Valerie, then when Valerie died it was Valerie's Family, and my understanding is they wanted to write her out completely even by name so they took her name out of it.

Yes the show changed its name several times to cut its ties from Valerie Harper. That is what made it so confusing at times. Yes it did make a switch to CBS because I remember when it happened over 20 years ago. A majority of the time it was spent on NBC but also switched to CBS just like Unsolved Mysteries did.

Unsolved Mysteries was on CBS for a short time and then went to Lifetime. Just 3 or 4 years ago Lifetime finally stopped airing Unsolved Mysteries which I loved to watch.

I don't even remember Unsolved Mysteries making a network switch, and I watched that one all the time too. I guess I was just a kid though.

Yes Unsolved Mysteries did make a switch to CBS. Just like Mama's Family did as well because I remember watching Mama's Family on NBC and then switched to CBS to go into syndication for the rest of the time.

lol you just remember everything :). umm... I do remember when Family Matters and Step by Step switched from ABC to CBS.. but that was only like 11 years ago.

reply

Well I have a very good memory for someone who is 36 years old. LOL Yes I remember when Family Matters and Step By Step switched from ABC to CBS to join their block party that they created to compete with TGIF.

And a name change would actually be appropriate in the present, seeing how everyone keeps thinking this is the stupid ass Hulk Hogan reality garbage program.

reply

Actually long before there was Hogan Knows Best there was this show which started back in 1986. Hulk Hogan was just rising as a star even though he was in the business for quite a while.

I think that The Hogans was just right for this show and did not need to change for the third time to be called The Hogan Family.

It did not change from Valerie to The Hogan's, it changed from Valerie to Valerie's Family. Valerie Harper had a lawsuit against them for her dismissal, and didn't want them using her name at all. With her dismissal and lawsuit being well-publicized, they were more than happy to drop her name altogether. So at the start of the fourth season it was renamed The Hogan Family. The Hogan's was added to the third season title (Valerie's Family: The Hogan's) later in season 3 to help with the transition to the new name.
