I know why there's a 14-year gap, supposedly between 1984 and 1986. Only the MOVIE came out in 1984, but the SETTING of the movie was in 1972.

In the movie, they drove a "77 orange and black Mustang". So that puts a hole in your 1972 theory, though it really doesn't matter. Some people get their nickers in a bind when they find inconsistencies between a movie and a sequel whether it be, another movie or TV series. Just take it for the value and content of what is presented. I am a fan of both movie and series, and I chuckle when I see the inconsistencies, but still enjoy watching both of them and will remain a fan. I think the biggest downfall of the series was ABC putting it in 6 time slots in one season. Some people had a hard time keeping up with all the changes. ABC foolishly canceled a wonderful show.

Oh well! :) There was also a segment of the episode "Starscape" (can't remember if it was pt. 1 or pt. 2), where George Fox is interviewing Jenny Hayden, supposedly in 1972, shortly after the alien left. He gave the date as being 1972.
Yeah, I wish they had continued that series. It was great.

You are right about "Starscape II" episode. They did say "12 March 1972", to give credence to their shift in the time frame. The show was .... "better than Dutch Apple Pie!"
This past April, a small group of fans went to Sedona, where it was filmed. It was pretty amazing. Some had been there years ago so they knew were to look for locations. Jenny's cabin has changed some but not much. The tiled stairway in the plaza has a lot of ivey growing on it now. We even went to the Meteor Crater the next day.
