I am working on the official DVD release now.

Just so you all know I am working on the official DVD releases as we speak, just thought I'd throw that out here. I noticed that you guys were wondering when it was coming out. I already finished all the episodes and I'm working on a high definition 16x9 4:4:4 Tilt/Scan as we speak.

reply

Any idea when the series will be released?

reply

Is this an "OFFICIAL" release? Do you own the rights to this program? I would love to purchase an official copy as others have not been worth the money.

reply

I'm hoping it's an official release! It needs to be officially released. Here's hoping!

reply

This is the official release from CBS/Paramount. I am unsure of the release dates though. We have completed quite a bit of the masters and right now I'm still working on the 16x9 versions.

reply

YES! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!

reply

WOW, the long wait was worth it, if it's getting released in HD.

reply

It figures that I broke down and bought the DVDs last week. Oh well, it was well worth it just to watch all the commercials from 1986. But I will definitely purchase an official set when it is released.

reply

It will be worth it. Whenever possible we put up the original film and re-scan it and this is one of those cases. The film is scanned in HD then re-color corrected, and dirt/scratch removal done on it. We also pull all the commercial breaks to 2 seconds long and re-layback the audio from the original sources and process that as well. Guaranteed the versions that are out there right now are not gonna be BluRay or 16x9.

We take the Sony HDCAM-SR 23.98/PsF master and downconvert that to create the standard definition DVD's as well, so those will look the best.

It's been two years and you ahven't been back, but why 16x9? it's an 80s TV-Show, even if it's shot on film it would never have been considered for widescreen. maybe 1.44:1 would work but any wider would surely compromise the image

reply

Yeah I don't remember exactly what the deal was with the aspect rations. It's been a while since I worked on this and frankly I have no idea what happened to the project after I left the company.

reply

No, tilt and scan is wrong. The show should remain in its Original Aspect Ratio of 1:37:1/1:33:1, as the filmmakers intended it to be seen.

Hoping for some extras like deleted scenes and interviews with the cast. I seem to recall scenes from the opening credits that were never shown in an episode. I have heard this was a demo reel but it looks like a lost episode. Let us know. I have been waiting 22 years for an offical release.

reply

That used to irritate me. I always wondered which episodes the staircase "Your mother was my friend" and fire scenes were from. Lost long pilot episode or demo, I'd like to see them as well.

reply

Many of the scenes on the lead in was from the presentation tape. It was quickly put together to pitch the idea to ABC and was actually no where near the quality of the actual show. ABC bought it for the upcoming year and they had to really hustle putting it into production. Unfortunately before it aired some critics got hold of the presentation tape and slammed the show and gave it really bad reviews. I read a few of those reviews, but watched the show anyway. I have found many times that I disagreed with the "critics"and this was a prime example. A copy of the tape was shown at the last STARMAN FAMILY-CON in 2006. That is where I learned about it.
I would love to see an official release but it seems strange that CBS would release a show ABC/Columbia aired and Sony owns the rights too. But that is just my opinion.

reply

This doesn't sound too legit. Why would CBS/Paramount be releasing the DVD set when Sony clearly owns the rights? The user who created the original post no longer exists according to imdb. Guys, please vote for this show on tvshowsondvd.com & send an email to sony. That is the only way we'll ever see an OFFICIAL release!

Don't know what this means exactly, but it looks hopeful and it was just recently added. Check out amazon.com:

That's false hope. It's just one of any number of user created entries on amazon. There's been one up for Tales of the Gold Monkey, another show I've been eagerly awaiting an official DVD release of for years, for years and so far no official word (rumors abound though). Believe me I would love to see an official release of Starman the TV series and would buy it in an instant, but I'm not getting my hopes up. There's been bootleg sets of this series out there for years. It's a shame that the studios would rather have us waste our money like this when they can easily release the show.
