Holmes' new haircut

A couple of episodes into The Return of Sherlock Holmes I noticed Holmes had a new haircut. I'm not so sure I like it. It kind of reminds me of a character in the original Adams Family series. Do you like the new haircut?

reply

No, not at all! I wonder why they changed it; the old one was perfect for Brett as well as for Holmes...

Apparently Jeremy cut his hair himself in one of his "manic" episodes, and the makeup and costume people were frantic because they couldn't slick his hair back in 1890s style.

I do remember reading elsewhere, that Jeremy Brett sort of defended his decision to cut his hair (Yeah, the particulars do have to do with his bipolar condition) based on seeing a picture of Holmes with a similar cut, drawn by Padget, published in the original Strand Magazine.

It was in The Red-Headed League, and here is a link:

I like it! I think SH would be prone to fits of strangeness like this as well. I also really appreciated when SH would wake up and dawdle about with unkempt hair in season 1. Makes him so much more human.

In an interview, he said that he cut his hair because he was tired of slicking down it with gel. Here's the quote:

"It’s so trivial it’s hardly worth mentioning... But, the thing is when you wear your hair as I was, and am wearing it again now, I have to gel my hair. Now gel is a very nasty thing to wear on a daily basis especialy when it’s as severe as it has to be. And sometimes when I have been filming I’ve had to gel twice in one day. And you really feel like a... It sets like cement, and it’s very uncomfortable. And I thought if I could get the same effect with short hair – and, I think, to a large degree I did – then I wouldn’t have to gel... gung my hair. So that’s why I did it and I think it worked. I think it made a nice change."
As a previous poster in this thread mentioned (in more detail), he also brought up a particular illustration from "The Red Headed League".

Courage, men! We've not sunk before, and we'll not sink now!
