Colin Jeavons

Yes, Jeremy Brett is my favorite Holmes of all time. The facial expressions and outbursts of snide laughter really bring out the Holmes I had in my mind when reading the stories. And both Edward Hardwicke and David Burke are excellent Watsons. But I think Colin Jeavons as Lestrade really should also get some compliments. I always find myself watching the ones with him in them. I love Lestrade and Holmes' banter. Mr. Jeavons really does an excellent job bringing Lestrade to life.

I agree 100%! I've watched the series 1.5 times and Lestrade has grown on me as a character. I find his mannerisms hilarious, e.g. how he draws out Holmes's name when he says "Mr. Holmes" and how he often sounds a bit snooty. Also worth noting is how Holmes embellishes his pronunciation of "Lestrade" as if to say "I'm so GLAD to see you" when you know he's not really. (I know, to say Brett/Holmes embellishes his speech is an understatement.) :>

I can't remember which episode this was in, but Lestrade crashes on the 221B couch for a few hours, then at Holmes's command they (including Watson) have to go track down a case...anyhow there are some cute moments of sympathy between Lestrade and Watson in that episode.

And--of course--that scene at the end of The Six Napoleans, telling Holmes that he's proud of him. I'm so glad they had that exchange. I think of Lestrade and Holmes as "frenemies" but in that scene I believe them to be friends.

I believe the episode you are referring to is The Red Circle.

This is one of my favorite shows of all time, and Lestrade is a great character and is played spectarularly by Jeavons. He is funny without trying. His misplaced confidence in himself to best Holmes in each case they work together is admirable. It is important that Lestrade never once bests Holmes. He would be sympathtic if not for his overconfidence.

Overall, the relationship between Holmes and the police (law in general) remains an interesting one. So often Holmes lets perpetrators of crimes go and rids himself of guilt by exlaiming "I am not the police!"
