Alternate 'Larry Appleton'?

So on IMDB it says Mark Baker did 149 episodes and Pinchot did 150. I seem to remember the very first episode having a different Larry Appleton. Is that correct? It would explain why Mark is 1 less episode than Pinchot.

If you watch the pilot on dvd, you'll see it's the same actor. There might be a random episode he's not in, or it's a mistake.

No, Mark Linn-Baker played Larry in every single episode.

I believe Louie Anderson actually played Larry in the pilot that was un-aired. So, if they are counting that, it could explain it.

reply

I am pretty sure they are not counting the un-aired pilot, it is possible that maybe Larry was in one episode only in past clips, which would count as archive footage and not as newly recorded material, the same thing happened with Frankie Muniz on Malcom in the Middle.

Interesting information! Thanks for letting us know about that!

Funny that they are saying Pinchot was in more. I seem to recall there being at least one or two episodes where Balki isn't present. Or am I just dreaming this?

Perfect Strangers . Dimitri's World # 7.11

Is the episode Larry isn’t listed in. Anybody remember it?

reply

I found it on Youtube and both are in it so I assume it’s just a list error.

My guess is that it's the original, unaired, pilot episode where Louis Anderson played Larry.

I watched Dimitri's World a couple of days ago and Mark Linn-Baker was in it.

I'm a little late to be adding to this but when an actor's episodes are listed, it means from production stand point. What this means is Mark Linn Baker filmed all his episodes in 149 appearances (filming his scenes for another episode at the same time) You will see this in a lot of shows

Louie Anderson as Larry Appleton
Perfect Strangers

There was never any doubt about the casting of Bronson Pinchot, as Perfect Strangers was developed (after several false starts) around his offbeat immigrant character. Finding the right foil would be critical, and the network’s first choice was comedian Louie Anderson.

“They hated me,” is all Anderson said in a TV interview about the filmed and then buried pilot. Mark Linn-Baker, invited to test after a guest spot on Moonlighting, proved a more popular choice.

Would it have worked?
Having not seen the Anderson pilot it’s difficult to speculate, but I would guess that ABC made the right call. Perhaps the objective was to develop a modern-day Laurel & Hardy with this duo, but Anderson’s persona of a self-deprecating gentle giant was already in place from his standup – if he played Larry that passively it would not have worked opposite Pinchot’s more manic Balki. Certainly he could have been asked to try something different, but on a TV series it’s always the actor that shapes the character more than the character dictates an actor’s choices. Sooner or later writers would have started playing to Anderson's traits, which are different from those that Mark Linn-Baker brought to the role.
