Ending Credit Music

When this show came on, I was around eleven. I religiously watched it, and I'll likely buy the DVDs. One thing I always remember was the music at the end of the show (closing credits) when Pee Wee was seen riding his bike in different locations. That music just haunted me. I loved it, but it made me feel melancholy. A girlfriend and I were recently talking about this, and she said it made her feel the same way.

I was wondering if anyone else was so effected by the music.

Yay!

I also like the ending theme. Also when the Simpson's goes off, the last thing which is only about 4 seconds long is good.

I think the music at the end is composed by Mark Mothersbaugh formerly of Devo.

Okay, but now I am also thinking that Todd Rungren did some of the music as well.

reply

I think so too, I'm not too sure though.

Todd Rundgren, Danny Elfman, The Residents and others composed the incidental music for the shows, but the opening and end credits were by Mark Mothersbaugh.

reply

Yea, he did the music for Rugrats and a few other early to mid-90's Nickelodeon shows too. If you listen to the music in Rugrats it should be stylistically familiar to any Pee-Wee fan. :)

reply

That is exactly how it made me feel. Still does, actually.

I bought the DVD's and played the end music for my friend the other day. We both had to stop for a moment and soak it up. I know Paul Reubans made some bad choices, but his show brought so much wonder and imagination to so many children. Watching an episode now, I see that so much of my artwork has been inspired by the imagery on the show.

I used to get sad. It was like Pee Wee was leaving me.

It was very wistful, like watching your childhood fade away before your eyes.

I kind of like it when a TV show's ending theme is sad. It makes you want to tune in and watch the gang again and again.

MST3K has some sad ending credit music, too.

As I recall Pee Wee's Playhouse was the last show CBS aired as part of its Saturday morning programming, so the end credits music not only meant the end of the Playhouse, but the end of Saturday morning. Definitely a memorable piece of music.

In an interview, Mark Mothersbaugh said his two main inspirations for the end music were the LASSIE theme and an old local kiddie TV show where the host would come in really close to the camera after an hour of kiddie-show antics and solemnly intone, "And remember kids, Barnaby loves you and wants you to come back next week..." Mothersbaugh said he'd see that at age five and it was the most depressing moment of his entire day.
