Justin LaMotte

Strange that David Carradine's character of Justin LaMotte is credited with all six episodes when he was killed in the first.

Well, there were many "big names" (but not only "big") in the opening credites, although they only had one or two scenes. Justin LaMotte was at least a significant character.

Point taken, Satchoff. (But according to the IMDB cast list he was in all 6 episodes.)

This is because the IMDb has a policy to reproduce the credit lists as seen on screen. So if an actor received an on screen credit but does not appear, he is still credited for that episode on the IMDb. However, it is possible to add 'credit only' to the actors name to indicate that he or she received a credit but does not actually appear.

In the case of Justin LaMotte, he appears in two episodes of Book II, and is indeed listed as 'credit only' for the remaining episodes. This can be seen on David Carradine's page and the pages for the episodes in question, but not on the character page for Justin LaMotte nor on the main page for North and South book II.

several of the main cast and "also starring" actors are credited in the main credits of each of the six screen credits even though they did not appear. i think you're right about imdb reproducing the screen credits.

on not sure why they did this but, in this case, they did.

They did it because billing is one of the negotiating points when actors are contracted for work. Those big-name actors must have had it in their contract their billing credit order and how many eps they got billing, regardless of how many they appeared in.
