two or three casettes?

I believe one person who was talking about the movie said it was on three casettes. My copy only came with two. does that mean part of the movie was edited out to make it into two?

and some of those people...will be realtors

reply

The only version I ever saw had only one cassette! Wow! I must have seen a REALLy edited one then!

Does anyone know what parts were edited?

It orginally aired in the US on PBS Wonderworks, in 3 parts, the second, I think, it might be third, replays alot of the part before it, I am guessing that the total running time would be less then 2 1/2 Hours long, so it could all fit on one Video Tape, how long is your one tape version? I think you may have the total movie, just put on one tape for economic reasons.

reply

Since I don't own the vhs I've seen (its a library tape) I don't know off the top of my head how long it is...but the next time I'm at the library, I'll check! Thanks for the info.

hi, i played becky in the little princess, it was a six part series in england, and i only had an old tape that i took off of the tv in 1986. I obtained an american version a few months ago (in two videos) and i am about to get it changed to an english format, as at present i am unable to watch it. So i will let you know then if the two videos are the full unedited version, if you want?

reply

Do let us know, Becky, or rather should I say, Natalie, I suppose. I loved the adaptation of the book, though I too have the American release on two videos. I think in all it's just over two and a half hours - I wonder if the original series was longer.

Mine came on 2 VHS tapes, and I think the total run time is 2hrs 45mins. I hope it hasn't been edited!!!

reply

mine's only one one tape and runs 2 hrs. 50 min(170 min is what the box says)

You were probably confused by whatever this person said. There are three sets to the movie but parts one and two are put together on one tape and part thee is put on to another tape.

I once borrowed a copy from the library which had 3 tapes. I just now got an order which has 2 tapes. I believe that the original broadcast was in 3 parts. I spoke with the distribution company (Feature Films For Families), and they put the entire WonderWorks program on 2 tapes.

I found my copy in a thrift store, for two bucks.  It's on one VHS cassette, recorded in EP mode, and the quality of the recording leaves much to be desired.  Feh!  What kind of commercial distributor skimps so tightly on quality that they would do this to a movie?  The box says 170 minutes, but I just watched it, and at the end, my VCR's counter said something between 2:30 and 2:40.  They could easily have put this in decent-quality SP mode on a commonly-available T160 tape.  This is a movie that certainly deserved much better treatement.

reply

ANother problem with the one cassette version is that, while it has all the footage, the dialogue is edited to remove any instances where the distributors thought character were taking God's name in vain. Sheesh! If they had such a problem with the film, why release it? Feature Films for Families needs to put some kind of notice that they edit films to represent their personal values.

As for the 2-3 tape debate, neither version is edited. Some released put parts 1 and 2 together (then show both end credits at the end of the tape) and others give each part it's own tape.

I never noticed a diffence in the two cassete and the one cassete. You think I would have noticed if lots of stuff had been cut or editied . . .

As a kid I used to check this out from the Library, and it came on three VHS tapes - but maybe that's just how it came to the libraries.

This series was distributed by several companies and there are 1, 2, and 3 VHS tape versions plus a DVD version. I have a copy of the 3 VHS tape version (based on the PBS Wonderworks TV broadcast) and the DVD version (based on the London Weekend Television broadcast). The UK and USA TV broadcast versions were edited by two different film editors to fit the program into the broadcast time slot for the TV airing. You ended up with a program with different scenes if you saw it on UK or USA TV. The total air time for the UK program is about 150 minutes (6 episodes of 25 minutes each) while the USA program ran for about 174 minutes (3 episodes of 58 minutes each). The 1 and 2 tape VHS versions merged portions of the 3 tape version into one cassette. The 3 tape version is recorded in SP play mode with each 58 minute segment on a single cassette. The 2 tape version is also recorded in SP play mode, but the tape set is broken into a 70 and 100 minute segments. The 1 tape set probably has a much slower play mode speed in order to fit the entire 170+ minute program into one cassette. Also, from what I saw and read, the 1 and 2 tape set was "censored" to remove certain references that might offend religious groups ("This version was approved by the Feature Films for Families"). So, the DVD version is how it was shown on UK TV and the 3 tape version is how it was shown on USA PBS TV. The 1 and 2 tape versions are nearly the same as the 3 tape version, except that a censor removed any audio references that were "inappropriate".

Update. I reviewed the run time of the VHS tape set that I have and that set appears to be only about 10 minutes more than the DVD version when I subtract the PBS promo material time from the overall run time of each tape. So the tape set is more closer to 160 minutes rather than 174.

After looking over the DVD and two and three VHS cassette sets, it appears that all three are slightly different from each other. The two VHS cassette set appears to be somewhere in between the DVD and three cassette set in terms of the scene edits. The DVD has the shortest total run time and the three cassette set seems to have the longest total run time. The DVD and three cassette set has scenes not included in the other set while the two cassette set shares some of these differences. The DVD's main drawback is quite a bit of editing was done throughout the presentation. Its strong point is the new scenes at the end of the series - Ermengarde letter reading scene, a longer Miss Minchin confrontation scene at Carrisford's house, and a slightly different ending scene at the bakery shop, plus the logical episode breaks (six parts with the nice artwork shown at the beginning of each part). The two VHS cassette set shares many of the edited scenes like the DVD, but includes some of the longer running scenes that are seen in the three cassette VHS set. The three VHS cassette set has more extended scenes overall which is its main strong point, but omits several rather important scenes like the Emily doll discussion scene between Sara and her father and Sara's first entrance to the classroom which is included in the DVD and two VHS cassette set. Also, the three VHS cassette set duplicated a portion of Part 1's ending into the beginning of Part 2. This might be a reason why the two VHS cassette set was released later to replace it and resulted in a different editing from the three cassette set.

These are the versions that I have found from searching online. I have viewed the first five items.

I am going to try to be as objective about the play time differences between the two and three VHS sets and the DVD version as I can. I found at least seven VHS releases of A Little Princess and two DVD releases. I will attempt to condense the run times of each version of those that I have seen so you can see how they differ. A couple of things to note from my figures - The run times do not include the Wonderworks program music additions or trailers. With the three cassette set, there are three opening credits and three ending credits to the series. For the two cassette set, there are two opening credits (1 opening credit skipped) and three ending credits to the series. For the DVD, there are six opening and closing credits to the series. The opening credits run just under 1 minute. The closing credits run just under 2 minutes. The total run times are based on when I saw the beginning of the opening credits and the end of the closing credits.

Three VHS tape set (UPC 037429025635) Public Media Video. Has trailers for Wonderworks "Sweet 15" (1990) and "Jacob Have I Loved" (1989). Total run time of 156 minutes 33 seconds (a portion of the ending of Part 1 (6 minutes) is duplicated at the start of Part 2 which I did not include in my run time) Note that each cassette of this three cassette set has its own different UPC value from the outer box case (UPC 037429025734, 037429025833, and 037429025932). Each cassette has its own separate slipcase contained within an outer cardboard box. The three tape set appears to be the earlier release version, so it appears that Public Media Video released the two cassette set later removing the duplicated scenes and replacing it with new material.

Two VHS tape set (UPC 037429059135) Public Media Video. Has trailers for Wonderworks "Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" (1988) and a preview of "A Little Princess" (1986). Total run time of 162 minutes 43 seconds

Two VHS tape set (UPC 745751004135) Bonneville Worldwide Entertainment. Has trailers for Wonderworks "Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" (1988) and "Caddie Woodlawn" (1989). Total run time of 162 minutes 43 seconds

Two VHS tape set (UPC 095163975234) Bridgestone Multimedia. No trailers and the package refers to the Bonneville Worldwide Entertainment license. Total run time of 162 minutes 43 seconds

DVD (UPC 741952665892) E1 Entertainment. Has trailer for "Ballet Shoes" (2007) with Emma Watson. Total run time of 156 minutes 15 seconds

DVD (UPC 4260261436604) ITV Studios KSM GmbH German distributor. It has selectable trailers, a photo gallery (8 pictures), and screen histories of Maureen Lipman, Amelia Shankley, David Yelland, and Nigel Havers (in German). Note that this is a Region 2 DVD (Europe DVD region) and has German/English audio and only German subtitles. The outer cover box is in German. Total run time of 156 minutes 15 seconds

As I stated above, the opening and closing credits run approximately under 3 minutes total and since the DVD version has the credits playing each time per episode, the additional credit playing time results in a smaller play time for the series (which would be more closer to less than 150 minutes). So for actual "acting" series run time, the 2 VHS tape set runs the longest, followed by the 3 VHS tape set, and the DVD has the shortest "acting" run time. The DVD version has a "better" ending for the story, in my opinion, since it includes the Ermengarde St. John letter reading scene, a longer Miss Minchin confrontation scene at Carrisford's home, and a slightly different ending scene at the bakery shop. However, it does have quite a number of scene editing cuts that makes the two VHS tape version a better choice. The two VHS tape set has almost 15 minutes more "acting" scene time than the DVD. That is the reason why some have complained about the DVD version. The editing done to the DVD and VHS were based on time constraints for showing the program on UK and USA TV stations. Some of the listings seen on vendor sites like Amazon listed run times of over 170 up to 180 minutes. None of my versions approached these run times. Perhaps, these numbers were based on the inclusion of the trailers and Wonderworks/PBS additions?

I also have a Part 2 VHS copy of the Feature Films for Families version which begins near the start of the 3rd spisode of the DVD version (or Part 2 of the VHS tape version) up to the series end (UPC 796323188333). The tape appears to have combined the three part series differently from the Public Media Video VHS version. The Public Media Video 2 tape set placed the first two parts on one cassette and left Part 3 by itself, while the Feature Films for Families version placed the first part on one cassette and placed Parts 2 and 3 together. This version appears the same for the most part to the Public Media Video version, except for the fact that certain spoken lines involving "Lord" and "slut" were censored out.

Be aware that some sellers have broken up the VHS case set and try to sell each cassette individually. Something that I would double check about before buying. Amazon has nine separate VHS listings for this program and 2 DVD listings. There is at least one other VHS tape release (Peter Pan Industries) that is not included in my review. If I should come across a copy of it and it is significantly different than the previous ones that I have seen, then I will update my review.
