Feature Films For Families will be releasing on DVD soon

I have verified that FFFF will be selling A Little Princess DVD on their website, familyfilms.com, in October or November of 2008.

I assume this will only be on region 1. I live in the UK and I have been waiting for years for this to be released on DVD. I had the VHS but foolishly gave it away. I will have to try and buy it from the US when it comes out. It's about time it was released on DVD.

Good things come to those who wait.

Any news on this? I tried looking on the FFFF website and could not even find the VHS listed (which they used to sell). Do you know if they are going to be selling this soon?

reply

Oh, I emailed FFFF and they told me they are still working on it. The VHS is available if you call them, but they hope to have the DVD ready in January. So it is coming soon!

reply

I hope so~~~it seems like I've been waiting forever. So much of the crap that Hollywood spews forth goes to DVD w/o a wait of any kind. And a wonderful movie for everyone, like this one, sits on a shelf forever before coming out on DVD. I don't understand it at all. But~~~to whomever has the rights, please get off your rear and give us this incredible film in DVD form!!! PLEASE!

Has anyone heard back from Feature Films for Families? I would love to have this on DVD. I've got three of them on VHS, because I never thought it would come out to DVD. I hope they didn't just dump the VHS on DVD without cleaning it up a bit and I hope they put all 170 minutes of it on the DVD.

I had an email from them last month and they said to check back with them in January. They were in the process of making the DVD and that it would probably be Region free. I also asked about hard of hearing subtitles or closed-captions. They said they would ask if that was possible. Let's hope we don't have to wait too much longer.

reply

Thanks nicola-may7! That would be wonderful. Do you think it would be digitally remastered? I know that's probably a lot to ask, but all my tapes have that "soft" look to it, if that makes sense. I hope there is enough interest to make this a very high quality DVD. I would probably buy two! This is one of my absolute favorite DVDs.

I had an email from Family Films this morning as I emailed yesterday regarding the release and this was their reply

"We do apologise for your inconvenience in this. I have been informed that due to the upcoming theatrical release of The Velveteen Rabbit, Little Princess has been put on the back burner. Please keep checking back with us.
I am hoping they will have it available mid summer."

So I guess we will have to be patient for a while longer but I must confess I am getting rather impatient for this DVD.

reply

Yea same message that I got. I am also getting impatient, but I guess if we've waited this long it will be a great production. At least I hope so.

I'd much rather see a different company release it. The version they released on VHS was edited, they removed dialogue such as "God knows how I'll pay for it" and some of the rougher verbal abuse towards Becky.

In Germany, this is out on DVD in the original 6 part version. This version has dialogue scenes not seen in the international version, but also omits some dialogue that is in the int. version. However, we do get to see the paintings made for each episodes beginning titles. Look around the net, you can probably find this version.

I own the VHS tapes, so I'm not quite sure if I feel that I need the DVD, especially considering that it comes with virtually no features. I would've loved to have seen a behind-the-scenes featurette at the very least. It took me a long time to procure the tapes so I feel like getting rid of them would make it seem like an effort wasted.

The DVD version was not released by Feature Films for Families, but by E1 Entertainment Studios. The DVD is based on the six part episode format as it was shown in England TV (and not like the USA PBS Wonderworks three episode format). The DVD London Weekend Television editor version is different from the Wonderworks PBS TV editor version in that some scenes and dialogue are different from each other. Yes, there are no extra features on the DVD. But, the six episode format feels more better suited to where the story pauses for the viewer (the UK broadcast was the original version shown and not the Wonderworks PBS version). As a whole, I felt the DVD version's plot continuity and story progression along with the different scenes were a better overall presentation than the VHS tape version. The DVD version run time was a bit under 150 minutes while the VHS tape version run time was a bit over 160 minutes. You saw more overall on the VHS tape version, but the tape version left out some scenes from the DVD version that I felt were more important to the story development.

I was able to locate the Feature Films for Families DVD version of "A Little Princess". It is listed on the familytv.com website. So besides the version by E1 Entertainment and the German distributor version (which were based on the UK TV presentation), there is another DVD version from the Utah based company. My guess is that this version has the censored words just like the VHS tape versions made by Feature Films for Families and perhaps is shown in the three part presentation format as on USA Wonderworks series on PBS TV.

Besides the www.familytv.com site, the www.steppingstones.com site also sells the PBS Wonderworks version program on DVD. The content of this DVD is the same as the VHS tape versions, but has some differences from the E1 Entertainment DVD version.
