Why did they tok Jem and the Holograms off the Hub?

I love that show but why did they take it off the hub? And why aren't they bringing it back for new eppys?

reply

Did they take it off the Hub? I thought they moved it to a weekend time slot.

Edit: It's been moved to 6:30 AM timeslot on Sundays.

I mean they used to have it on during the week it's on the during the week any more and why aren't they bringing the show back I would love for it to pick up where it left off again.

reply

They probably rotated it out in favor of new shows. They have cycled through all of the episodes a few times now. As for bringing the series back, I don't know if it's popular enough to justify that or not. And even if it was popular, the music scene has changed a lot since the 80s. I don't know if they could still do a series remotely similar to the original or not.

I'd like to see it brought back too, but I'm not sure how likely it is to happen like that.

reply

I wish that they would keep it on during the week I really enjoy watching Jem and the Holograms brought back old times like they have brough back Caption Planet and the Planeters at one time and they took off the line up totoly.

It would of been great to see Jem and the Holograms brought back again I mean they've brought back the Thunder Cats and Johnny Q they miles well bring back Jem and the Holograms as well. But your right it's not the 80's anymore.

The difference between Jem and other 80s cartoons is that Jem is directly tied to the pop culture of that era. The fashions, the music, etc. Jem herself is partly modeled after Madonna. If the series was done today, they'd have to update her style to modern pop music and probably put some kind of new spin on it as well in order to distance itself from something like Hannah Montana.

I'd still like to see it, if it was done right, but it's not the easiest show to update.

reply

Man, I see what you mean though. I wish that we can find someone to update it right for us though.

How DARE YOU!!!! Comparing Jem to that hag! Jem stayed the same for decades and is better for it. Even a modern day Jem would revel in its 80s nostalgia without it being a tribute-style thing like 80s nostalgia is today. Madonna kept adapting to avoid being irrelevant. Jem doesn't need to adapt.

And modern-day Jem would take place in today's society but still flaunt its gorgeous 80s aesthetic WITHOUT it being a nostalgia trend, thus proving that things never really change.

And if Jem is modeled after anyone, it's obvious that she's equal parts David Bowie and The Runaways, the latter of which owe much to one Suzi Quatro.

The Misfits, naturally, are essentially a comment on punk rock's assimilation into popular music, eventually treated as nothing more than a sound and a look while throwing the vibe and attitude under the bus to appease the ignorant masses. This actually would later happen in the 2000s, when a mild punk resurgence converged with the dying boy band revival and led to such bands as Good Charlotte and Blink-182.

We're talking about Madonna back in the 1980s, not in the 1990s, 2000s, or 2010s. Listen to her song Lucky Star and tell me you don't hear Jem. That's where the Starlight House got its name from. ("Starlight, star bright...") I'm sure that a modern reboot would modify her character and most likely model her after a contemporary musician.

Jem was her own woman and I know that she would have followed her own path in life instead of following after all that Madonna has done. Both were successful female pop singers, but it doesn't a lot of effort to find the differences between them.

reply

I don't get the Madonna reference, I'd say she's just as easily Cyndi Lauper, mixed with Susanna Hoffs and some Lita Ford hair, maybe even some Cher. Madonna never wore colors in her hair or that hard rock look and crazy makeup on her face.. I really can't see how Jem resembles Madonna in any single way, other than being an 80s female singer.

To update it for the current times wouldn't be too hard I'd think, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Kesha wear looks now that aren't all that different from the 80s cartoon.

or maybe not lol http://www.youtube.com/SunbeltRyders

I don't see the Madonna comparison in Jem, if I had to compare Jem to Madonna I would compare her to the very beginning Madonna.

reply

He or she is talking about the early to mid eighties Madonna and Luna Star was supposed to be like Madonna, too. Shana reminds me of Whitney Houston.

Jem's a little closer, at least to me, to being a cross between Pat Benetar and Lita Ford. Not Madonna.

The Hub channel is now Discovery Family channel. They will occasionally show Jem cartoon episodes at 4 in the morning.

Where I'm at (Anchorage) they immediate took Jem off the air after the movie bombed. At least that is my theory, because it happened at almost the exact same time, on the Discovery Family Channel. Now it's a different show: Transformers, like Prime or something stupid and inferior to Jem. I am saddened.
