How was this show anything like Seinfeld?

How was this show anything like Seinfeld? Let's see:

Garry Shandling plays Garry Shandling, a self-obsessed stand-up comedian.

His best friend is a nebbishy guy who wears glasses.

His neighbor is a tall drink of water and a ladies' man. (Only appeared in the first six episodes.)

Also on the show is Nancy, a girl who Garry used to have a "thing" with, but now they're just platonic friends.

Plus there's all the meta humor on both Garry's and Jerry's show.

While I don't think Seinfeld lifted It's Garry Shandling's Show's entire format (there is no breaking the fourth wall in Seinfeld; Garry's best friend is married and has kids, etc.), I believe it's at least possible that some aspects of Seinfeld's characters were inspired by the characters on Shandling's.

Yes, Tom Gammill and Max Pross should sue themselves.

don't know anything about this show, but Curb Your Enthusiasm certainly borrowed from The Larry Sander's Show, so I wouldn't doubt it.

This debate has gone on for years.

I have to say that I used to love Seinfeld until I saw IGSS.

The biggest similarity between the shows to me is the way his friends and neighbours just dropped into his apartment during the show.

Oh, and how similar, in the early seasons, the Leonard character was to Newman in Seinfeld. Fat, annoying guy that Garry/Jerry didn't like.

Shandling and Seinfeld are friends so it would be interesting to to hear their opinions about it.

I figured I'd chime in here a few years into the discussion by bringing up a little known and highly relevant fact: episode 12 of IGSS was written by none other than Larry David himself.

I was just thinking the same thing as the O.P. today.
