They really should have given Niko a better haircut...

I don't know about you, but I reckon Niko would look a lot sexier without the fringe. Anyone else agree?

I never had a problem with Niko's hairstyle - it had a sort of "China Doll" look to it. Now, I just wish they had lengthened Goose's blonde hair a bit, and tied it in a tail in the back like Steven Seagal...

Urk...I'm not sure about giving Goose a ponytail. Personally, I liked it just the way it was (I also just can't put him and Steven Seagal in the same league - but then, that's just me...).

Hmmm...well, I can definitely see what you mean by "China Doll". But for me, I dunno - her hairstyle just didn't seem quite right to me. I thought it was just a bit too dorky looking for her (or rather, she was just too sexy for *it*). But I digress.

While I'm at it, I'd also just like to say that Niko, as a character, *should* really have been given a little more depth. I still liked her a lot, but far too often her role seemed to be reduced to swooning from a psychic attack and Goose having to catch her.

But heck, enough rambling about all that - "Galaxy Rangers" is still one of the greatest animated series of any decade that's ever come out of the US, and whatever shortcomings it and many other cartoons of its era may have had, I still love it and *all* its characters!

I say bring more episodes out on DVD! (Are you listening, Koch Vision?);-)

Yep, as a young kid during the 80's, I rememberd watching uber-cool shows on TV like The Galaxy Rangers, Bionic Six, Visionaries: Knights Of The Magical Light, Jayce And The Wheeled Warriors, and Real Ghostbusters. Mighty Orbots was another really cool albiet short lived and forgotten 80's show, although I didn't watch it when it was first broadcasted (didn't know it existed). I only discovered Mighty Orbots for the first time years later when I stumbled onto the VHS tapes at my local video store. Besides good production designs and animation, these shows had a certain "heart" about them that's sadly missing in so many other Western produced animated shows (even today).

I wish they release all the episodes of those shows on DVD. Hell, I would even support reviving those shows with new episodes (it's either that or having to endure the umpteenth incarnation of Scooby Doo and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)...

I'm not sure I ever even got to see Bionic Six, Visionaries or Jayce. I *do* remember Real Ghostbusters, though - I loved that show to bits!

I've gotta tell you, hey_o, I have often felt the same way as you about today's Western cartoons lacking a certain kind of "heart", as you put it. I really don't quite know how to define it myself, but I do think I know what you mean. Galaxy Rangers was, in my opinion, one of the best cartoons of all time to ever come out of America - it really was a lot more intelligently written and produced overall than a lot of Western cartoons either then or now.

*Sigh*...As a kid of the '80s, it's depressing to hear how much I'm starting to sound like a boring old fart!;-)

"Cartoons just ain't what they used to be..."

P.S. About how you said you'd even support reviving old shows with new episodes? Well, don't hold your breath waiting, but I read a review on Amazon.com for one of the GR DVDs which said that the show's creator, Robert Mandell, had actually spoken recently about making a straight-to-video movie sequel to the series that would wrap up its loose ends, ie. Zack rescuing Eliza, the Rangers defeating the Queen, etc. I know I'd shell out the cash to pick that one up! Fingers crossed...

They would also need to recast Zachary Fox's voice actor since Jerry Orbach passed away not too long ago.

*Sigh*...Unfortunately, that's true. Who would you suggest? I can't think of anyone myself.

Long live the Galaxy Rangers...and Jerry Orbach, for that matter!

reply

No one in particular as long as the voice is the same. For example, after Muppets creator, Jim Henson passed away, a search was carried out for a replacement for the voice of Kermit the Frog. An actor who could mimic that voice was found, and now you can't tell the difference.

Yeah, same thing with Buster Bunny on "Tiny Toon Adventures" - he was originally voiced by Charlie Adler, then John Kassir took over after a dispute. I sure hope they'd be able to find someone who could do a good impression of Jerry, not to mention bring back all the other original voice actors for the series.

And, for that matter, I sure wish Koch Vision would hurry up and release more episodes of the series on DVD already - I'm getting impatient!

No guts, no glory!

Not only are they dragging their feet with the DVD releases, the episodes are out of order. I think that's kinda insulting towards the fans. When a particular TV anime series is released on DVD, the episodes are at least in order (each episode is even chronologically numbered on the back of the DVD case to avoid confusion).

reply

Yeah, I know what you mean about the episode order. It might make me sound like a geek, but I'm such a stickler for that kind of thing that I even made sure to watch the episodes from those first four DVDs in the order that they were originally transmitted!;-) I just found the info regarding all that over on epguides.com.

Personally, though, that doesn't trouble me anywhere near as much as the fact that they're just taking so damn long to come out! Another, similar show from the same period that I really want to see released on DVD is "Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs" - it's been months now and only one volume has seen an English language DVD release!

Hurry up, Koch Vision - you *know* we'll buy them!
