Firefly/Serenity... hmmm

With Serenity now out on DVD, doesn't it make you wonder why a live-action Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers motion picture or television program was never developed?

In Firefly and Serenity, the protagonists walk the thin line of criminal behavior and moral decency in a space-western frontier. With Galaxy Rangers, the protagonists are the law in a space-western frontier. Although Rangers is more polished with higher technology, robots, and alien beings, the two shows have quite a lot in common. Both shows have likable characters that are relatable. While never preachy, both programs dealt a lot with doing what was right, especially if it helped the underdog. And last, but not least, both shows were snuffed out before their prime.

It's a shame that television networks are quick to axe interesting programs because of claimed lack of ratings, cost of production, and the never-ending quest for the next "IT" show. Quite a number of stories have been easily digestible when mixed with science fiction:

Star Trek -- human rights, the horrors of war
V -- Fascism in America
Enemy Mine -- overcoming bigotry during wartime
Blade Runner -- the philosophy of life and death

A live-action Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers would be a great way to bring audiences back from mindless "reality" programs and depressing science fiction shows like the new Battlestar Galactica. I miss having real heroes to root for. "Rangers are forever" makes a nice battlecry.

What do you think?

I couldn't agree with you more, let's bring the Rangers to life.

I was wondering if anyone else saw the parallels in Galaxy Rangers and Firefly. Both kinda space-westerns, motley crews bringing their own special talents together, kick-ass female psychics. I'm wondering if Joss knew of this show before he started making Firefly. I think it is time to resurrect this 80's gem either in live-action or animation.

They are distinctly similar.

You know what, I agreed whole heartedly with everything you said and its like you were in MY mind UNTIL...you got to the last sentence proclaiming that the new Battlestar Galactica was "depressing." ARE YOU SMOKING CRACK?! Battlestar Gallactica is one of the BEST shows on TV today. Cutting edge special effects, A-1 actors, Top notch drama, and not to mention they've won an emmy or two since your posting. Are you watching the same show as everyone else or maybe your watching the origional series and just MISTAKING it for the new one? lol!

While the new Battlestar Galactica may appeal to you, I don't care for it. I tried to sit through two seasons and finally gave up. To me, and maybe a very small minority, the show is very dark and depressing. The thing I like about the original, nostalgia aside, was the upbeat atmosphere and the fact that there were relatable heroes. Sure the show had a LOT of flaws--poor acting, retred SFX, lack of scripts/plot, etc--but when I was a kid, I didn't mind. Sure the new show has drama, acting, bells and whistles, but if the story doesn't appeal to me, it seems pointless to continue wasting my time.

So, enjoy the new show. Countless others do. I'll be watching something else.
Peace

Funny you should say that - when I was describing this show to a friend he said "Sounds like Firefly told from the point of view of the Alliance."

It would be cool if someone would dust this show off and give it another go at fame & fortune (along with Silverhawks and Exo-Squad) but I don't see it happening any time soon. Maybe some day...

Crazy as it sounds, the only guy I can think of for Zachary Foxx is Chris Evans, but after Captain America & The Avengers I doubt he would sign up for another big franchise requiring him to wear white & blue (even without red).
