A question for you Canadians out there...

Is it (or was it, since I don't know whether the laws have changed) actually common for teens to move out once they turn 16 like Michelle did?

(I still can't believe she managed to stay at that apartment for a whole year-- terrible roommates, and juggling school and a relatively demanding job. Yikes! But I can totally see why she did it... her dad reminds me of mine, and let me tell you, people like him aren't easy to live with at all.)

I"m not canadian, but I think I can say with confidence that that was not common in any country or on any planet to move out and get your own place while you're still in high school. In her case, she learned in the end that that was a stupid decision

reply

No it is not common out here for 16 year olds to move out

My dad moved out when he was 15, but he also dropped out of high schook, this was in the late 80's and could have been common then.

In Canada, well Ontario at least, you can legally move out and/or be "kicked out" by your parents once you turn 16. It's not common but it does happen.

i moved out on my own with a roomie when i was 17 in 1988 and i'm canadian. although i didn't really know anyone else in my situation. lots of kids would 'run away' back then and it was common to go live in a foster home for a while though... a lot of my friends did that. i didn't. i just moved the hell out, finished grade 12 and went to the bar every night. lived on like 500 dollars a month too. gah!

I would say most canadians run away from home at 16 or 17

It's definitely uncommon here and I believe the law does have a problem with it, but it still happens on occasion. When I was 16, two girls in my class rented an apartment together and all they did was smoke pot and drink, which they later regretted. :-\

In that episode where she moves in and she's cutting school to go to work and falling behind, her dad ends up helping her with her bills so she won't have to work so much (BLT mentions this at the end). It must have been a bad place, considering she said the kitchen was so filthy even the cockroaches were complaining.

It's not common but it happens... although I know it happens in the US too and I'm sure it's no more often here.

It is extremely difficult to do as most landlords won't rent to a teenager.

Also, I don't know how things may have differed in the 80's/90's but I live in Toronto currently and I know that it is highly unrealistic for a teenager to move out and do okay (they absolutely could not sustain an education and living on their own.)

People under 18 are only paid $10.70/hour and even the most run-down, basement apartment, quite aways from the city core (and from the location where Degrassi is) will cost around $1000.

Anyways, yes it happens but not often and usually not with the success the character had lol.
