DVD?!

When are the BBC going to release the brilliant comedy Dear John on DVD? As it was written by John "Only Fools" Sullivan I thought it would have been earmarked for release before now.

It's a particular shame as many poor-quality comedies get released on DVD and the classics of the genre get ignored.

reply

Completely agree, its definately about time for "dear john " to be released,
fantastic comedy series, john sullivan at his best! perfectly casted and perfect writing!

reply

You would have thought the BBC would repeat this gem, instead of the endless "fools and horses" episodes that clog up the airtime. Maybe they've lost the master copy?

The episode with the shaver and the aquarium is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I slid off the sofa laughing.

Dear John - The Complete Series is due for release by 2Entertain as a 3 disc set on February 5th 2007

reply

excellent. i can't remember too much about it now but it was one of the funniest sitcoms around at the time.

reply

Same here, I was just a kid but have fond memories of it. Kirk St Moritz seems to ring a bell... let's be thankful it's finally getting a release at long last on DVD. About time. They may even repeat it- they repeat every other thing - Open All Ours was on prijetime the other night. I couldn't adam and eve it.

Amazon.co.uk have a release date of June 4th 2007.

Oh well, it'll be worth the wait, as will series 3 of Just Good Friends (released same date). Oh joy!!

reply

Unfortunately it seems that the release of Dear John and Just Good Friends Series 3 have now been deleted and will not be released on June 4th 2007!

reply

What's your source, Stuart? Do you have a link? I just checked on Amazon.co.uk and both are still available for pre-order with a stated release date of June 4th.

I'm going to be very disappointed if they really have been deleted!

reply

Sendit.com have them listed as deleted and they are no longer available to order at the BBC Shop site which is usually a very accurate source of information.

I too am very disappointed if these websites are correct in that really have been deleted from the release schedule.

I can't understand why they would do this - they would be really big sellers for the BBC!

reply

I have this on order at sendit.com, along with "Just Good Friends" series 3. Both *had* the release date of June 4th, but now DJ has been put back to Sept. 30th. It's annoying, but at least it still has a release date (at the moment!)

I'm wondering if JGF series 3 will also be put back to that date? I'd like to think so, because even though it means more waiting, *any* given and *confirmed* release date would be better than none at all, as is currently the case.

Damn disappointing, all round.

Delays are usually to do with royalties for incidental music in the background or the like.

Had the DVD on order but it was delayed and haven't been sent a release date.

reply

The Beeb should stop wasting money on presenters, and alleged "Stars", and spend the money releasing gems like this!

reply

Where did you buy them?

Hi G

I had the first series on video but didn't bother transferring to dvd cos I assumed it would be released. Now I wish I hadn't been so stupid.

Don't suppose you'd consider knocking out some copies of yours would you?

HMV are selling the boxset containing series 1, series 2 and the Christmas special for £29.99 i bought it on Monday but the ending of episode 1 series 1 has been cut, i think it's because they make references to The Beatles, it's the scene when John and Kate are walking out of the community centre and asking each other if they'll be going there next week. There's also music from The Beatles earlier on in the programme that's been dubbed out but these scenes weren't cut only the ending scene is cut, this obviously due to rights issues.

There are two kinds of people in the world my friend those with loaded guns and those who dig

reply

It's on their website too - as an HMV Exclusive apparently.

Good call bro, I feel a purchase coming on ...

reply

Amazon have the release date for the Complete 2 series & Christmas special as 4 October 2010.

According to HMV's website it was released on 10th may but is out of stock at the moment.

Very strange.

reply

The reason for this is that HMV have an exclusive double pack containing all episodes from both series, and the christmas special.

reply

Ah, cheers that explains it. Think I'll wait for Amazon's release and see if the price comes down nearer Christmas.

If my memory serves me well, it was very good in the day - but wonder if it has stood the test of time.

reply

Every episode is on Youtube - do a search for 'Dear John Bates' and you'll find them.

reply

Thank you so much houndtang75

reply

As I had hoped it has come down significantly in price, just ordered the full series & Christmas eps through Amazon for £18 a couple of days back.

reply
