Far too 80's looking and sounding for the 60's

I picked up the first season box set last week and am enjoying it, haven't seen it since it aired and I'm a big fan of Dennis Farina. I'm struggling to get past how 80's it looks despite being set in the early 60's. I wouldn't have noticed first time around i guess but sure, some 50's and 60's cars, a bit of old furniture and some of the clothes are correct but mostly not. A lot of the shirts and ties are so 80's and Miles Davis playing in the Jazz Club, what the hell was he wearing?? Nobody dressed like that in the 60's for sure, also the crazy criminal who offed those ladies in the salon?? His hair, jeans, cut off shirt and tattoos were so wrong. Also the music is just so wrong, why couldn't they use 60s music and even attempt to make the incidental music fit the era? It's a bit off putting. Apart from that, I'm enjoying it.

Keep in mind some of the music was altered for the DVD release and is not what originally aired.

Just sayin'...

Wait a minute... who am I here?

Hi Jazzthing - by your comments I am assuming that you were actually living in Chicago in the early '60s, correct? Don't know about you, but I saw first-hand around Old Town folks starting to be wearing crazy stuff as the very start of what would become the hippie movement/culture, etc. Also, some of the "sets" were a bit "deco" if you want to call it that, but I do remember that too.

I think the club scenes with Miles Davis were meant to be reminescent of places up along Rush Street - Mr. Kelly's, and the Blue Note OR Lakeview Neighborhood - Quiet Knight, Bronzeville - Velvet Lounge, etc. where he actually played.

Much of the soundtrack used IS from the 50's and 60's... look at this link for a per-episode listing: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090410/board/nest/98455381?ref_=tt_bd_2
I know I heard a lot of those tunes listed in the episodes - some as bits of several seconds, to be sure. Others were nearly the full song, like "Keep Searching" by Dell Shannon.

I am guessing that you know the series producer (Michael Mann) also did Miami Vice during that time frame too... Talk about '80s! Crockett and Tubbs just don't cut for me as much as Torello and his guys did, but that's just me! 😁

Anyways, glad you still like the series, even if you see stuff you object to. That was a great show with a very accomplished cast and I always wished there were more episodes / seasons, but it wasn't to be. No reunion either, RIP Dennis Farina.

It is definitely the 60s seen through an 80s lens, but in the 80s it was modern day.
No doubt, this would have appealed to fans of Miami Vice.
