Fave Character

Appologies if this has been done before, but who is your fave crime story character and why?

Mine has to be David. He is involved in so much of the action and i think that he is a great character.

Torello's my favorite. He's way beyond the stereotypical "Dirty Harry"-style maverick cop because he's a pretty complex character as well. Sociopathic and mean-spirited, as well as good-hearted and heroic.

Either Mike, or Frank Holman for me. In fact, the entire main cast is great!

Mike's my favorite, by far. I'm a huge fan of everything Farina has done, he's great. However, Anthony Denison doesn't get *nearly* enough cred for the way he played Ray Luca! He did a good job in 'Wiseguy' and 'Playmakers', and I like his work on 'The Closer', but he hasn't gotten that locked into a character since playing Luca, IMHO.

The conflict between his and Farina's characters drove the hell out of 'Crime Story'. Remember the episode where Ray and his men murdered the undercover guy Mike planted in his squad? "Is this the BEST you can do, Torello?!?!" Strong stuff.

And if someone could tell me what episode that was, I'd appreciate it. :o)

Totally agree. And the episode "Love Hurts" when Luca has an affair with the movie star Teddi Baxter was HOT!!

The episode was "The Pinnacle," and the character was Jack Claymore played by the great James Gammon.

I agree - that was a great episode and he's a great actor, though I'll always think of him as the manager from Major League.

its got to be paulie, because he was perfect. in my travels, i have met a few of these goons... simple, not too bright... perfect soldier.

Frank Holman, bar none.

1. He steals every scene he's in.

2. He very believable as a slimy little weasel, with allegiance to no one.

3. He always throws in nice personal touches while acting.
One of my favorites is while driving in his car, (which is the coolest in the series), he not only picks his nose, but eats the booger like he's done it a million times.

He is simply the epitome of a creep.

Torello.

Just too cool for words.

(but I also agree Denison doesn't get enough credit for playing Luca)

Danny Krycheck. No particular reason.

I agree with the above posters about Denison, and about Ted Levine (Holman). I've never seen Levine do a bad job.

reply

REALLY curious to know why IMDB deleted that post above because, if I'm remembering correctly, all the person did was post that they thought Torello was their fave character.

This is the kind of show where the bad guys are generally more interesting than the good guys. I'd say it's a tie between Pauli and Holman. I note with interest that Pauli's IMDb page says the actor (John Santucci) is a former jewel thief in real life!

reply

I realize I am just getting here now, but I've watch the series many times over and love it!

If you read the Trivia section for this IMDB link, you'll see that the co-creator was actually a cop that worked with Dennis Farina who was a real-life cop for 18 years before turning to acting. Many other characters are based on real-life people as well... Cheers!

Walter, but only narrowly because I got a real kick out of Pauli.

Hard to say... toss-up between Torello and Frank Holman. That's not to say the rest weren't great, but Torello was uniquely hard-nosed and mission-driven. Brave and tough, too. Holman was oddly relatable, quirky and fun, although he was occasionally quite vicious. Favorite scene was him buying one newspaper, then grabbing the whole stack in order to taint the jury deciding Ray Luca's fate. Classic.

...and Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lotta ice, whenever he's away
