Don't know much about cars...Locking Decon Frye's Car Door

In the opening sequence of each episode Sherman Hemsley gets out of his car and puts the key in the door to lock it... Is it necessary to do it that way with the make and model of his car ? ... Isn't there an easier method that doesn't require the key ?

You could also close the door in the locked position and then it will be locked. I guess they did it that way because it showed that the Deacon was old fashioned or something?

Late to convo, but...

I think it was supposed to be a joke...he's parking in a CHURCH parking lot and obviously locking his door.

A church that was right in the middle of a big city. Someone could walk off the street and get into a car. I live in a small town, and I still lock my car all the time, even when I'm at home. Maybe times were different back then.

I guess that was back before all cars came with an alarm system. Remember when we had to have them installed?

That's the thing that always stood out to me when I was younger. I always thought it was strange that he did that.

It's funny the things you notice when you're younger.

Back in 1986, most people still had to lock their car doors manually.

To answer the question...no his car is an Oldsmobile and GM cars of that era could also be locked by activating the lock from the inside.

But as others have stated it was part of a joke that he didn't trust anyone as the warning for people not to park in his spot so they show him locking his car door.

But also as others have noted, before remote locks became available, it was relatively common to lock the door this way. And some models, (mostly foreign) DID require you to lock it this way as a prevention for locking yourself out.
