Surprising plot similarities with movies: “Witness” (1985, Harrison Ford) vs “The Last Samurai” (2003, Tom Cruise)

*main characters are both wounded in battle

*both are taken to very idyllic “throw-back” communities from their respective countries (Japanese village/Amish village) to convalesce

*Both gradually adopt the archaic culture of these communities working side by side with peers and their traditions (sword play/barn raising)

*both replace recently deceased and become husband and father figures to their respective host families

*Both only begrudgingly leave these communities

It’s just the “going native” theme. It is used in many films.

Honestly, I really think of this film as being a modern day version of "Shane"
