R.I.P. Jan Rubes

From wenn.com:

Veteran actor Jan Rubes has died, aged 89.

Rubes passed away on Tuesday. His cause of death was unknown as WENN went to press.

Born in Czechoslovakia, the star found fame in the 1940s as an opera singer and won first prize at the Geneva International Music Festival in 1948.

He furthered his career by moving to Canada before branching out into acting.

His most noted role was opposite Harrison Ford in 1985 film Witness, which was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won two.

Rubes was also a TV star, appearing in shows including The X-Files, Due South and Stargate Sg-1.

He is survived by wife Susan, two sons and three grandsons.

Rubes played Amish patriarch Eli Lapp. I remember his character's warning to detective John Book (Harrison Ford) at the end of the film: "You be careful out among the English."

This certainly has been a rough month for notable actors/performers/pitchpersons.

RIP Jan Rubes

Great actor - and opera singer.

I loved his performance in this film: that combination of rigid religious conformity on the one hand, and his humour and tender warmth on the other.
