When Ford started singing in the barn. Really awkward.

If that's how you feel, I can't say you're wrong.
But I WILL say that rather than give Ford dancing and singing lessons, they just let him act how he would act. John Book is a hard-edged police detective, not a singer or dancer. Book is letting his hair down, which I think is one of the points of the scene. Other films would have polished the scene; Peter Weir decided to let it be natural, awkwardness and all.

I agree, it was more natural the way it was done. It's such an over-produced "Hollywood" approach to show everyone can display any talent with perfection even something this minor to the story.

i thought the scene was really sweet
but were i hireing someone to sing and dance it wouldn't be mr.ford

I thought it was a beautiful scene. I loved the song too.

Fortunately, Ford at least sings on key, which is nine/tenths the battle. Unfortunately, he has ZERO sense of rhythm. His hand drumming was so far off time it's painful for me to watch, although nowhere as painful as listening to Tom Cruise "sing" in Top Gun.

I think is more than ok, he was a policeman not a singer. He just wanted to have a little fun with Rachel.
