Amish abuse, how realistic and frequent is it?

Referring to the sequence where Book intervenes and destroys that redneck, I know it was played up for dramatic effect in the film but in reality how often does something like the ice cream scene or knocking hats off their heads really occur?

What made it ridiculous was the Bartles and James coot complaining to Eli how the Ohio cousin standing up for himself was "not good for the tourist trade, you know." Are you kidding me? And thank you for your support.

It's hard to get accurate statistics. The Amish don't report crimes against them to the police.

I used to live in the vicinity of Amish and Mennonite communities, and I think that scene was way overdone. Neither the townspeople nor shopkeepers - Amish or otherwise - nor the town's police would tolerate it. For starters, it would be bad for business for the town's vendors. Plus, people generally tend to either step in to help, or they call the cops. The local cops would jump all over thugs like that.
