Why didn't he... (*Spoilers*)

Why didn't he just contact the FBI right away?
Such a big drug scandal and corruption high up in the police force, wouldn't the FBI be the place to turn?
Run away to a place with little to no communication technology, almost nobody else knows about the witness, except the bad guys. Wouldn't the bad guys guess one of the likely locations to hide out would be the Amish community? Seems like a setup for disaster. But then the movie theme relies on it I guess.

The Mad satire sort of mentions this. Maybe he wasn't in the greatest shape to get to the FBI. Remember, he had collapsed from loss of blood.

Yes, his first thought is to get the mother and son to safety, then he passes out from blood loss before he can get any further.

Remember, after he got the family to safety and recovered from his wound, he called Carter. He informed Book that it was "too hot" to make any moves!

Book and his partner briefly discuss the FBI as a possibility by phone while Book is with the Amish and well enough to go into town and use a phone. But nothing more, which seems pretty unrealistic.

Of course, these types of movies have the hero avoid going for obvious help, then later, while unarmed, take down blood-thirsty killers with nary a scratch and no casualties among innocent bystanders.

Remember back when he talked with Schaeffer after the kid identified McFee as the killer. Schaeffer asked Book if he talked to McFee about it but he mentions that McFee was on vacation . Schaeffer tells him to keep it just between them and that they can handle it with the Feds. Of course Schaeffer is in on it so that pretty much stopped Book from doing anything

"So, a thought crossed your mind? Must have been a long and lonely journey"

I agree with you. It defied logic.
