Jim + Brandon - Gay Lovers?

Tell me someone else picked up on this.

The tortured romance between two douchebags! The film begins by showcasing the angst-ridden tatters of Jim and Brandon's former relationship: bitter, resentful, and jealous. The second half of the flick is essentially a boys-only road trip which rekindles their mutual affection. Sharing a hotel room boys? Kinky!

This film is hilariously awesome, but you cannot deny the homosexual undertones. The girl is a total afterthought.

Wow, you people are lame. The thing I find even more amusing is that if the situation was the same with two females, this garbage wouldn't even be brought up. I hope you did notice that there were 2 beds in the motel room and men travel all the time and share a room to cut on expenses. I realize this may not happen in the Redneck world, but I gotta' keep in mind that there is ignorance everywhere.

reply

Yes, there is ignorance everywhere.

Lets not forget that when Brandon dies,,,Jim also cries. Pretty major as Brandon said he had never seen Jim cry.

I love your take on this! Definitely agree especially with Jim crying over him scene.

Come. It is time to keep your appointment with the Wicker Man...

I've just got to say that you peeps need to watch this flick again:

1. Brandon & Jim were friends since childhood. Their relationship was more of brother since both Jim's parents were alcoholics; Jim practically grew up with Brandon and his parents.

2. Jim went off to med school. That's where he met Linda; Linda before taken off to university life had dated and broken off with Brandon.

3. Brandon felt that Jim had betrayed him and robbed him of an opportunity to get back with Linda; or maybe he was just a sore looser...LOL..

Now...altogether...let us put two and two...and you will see is not 22....

Yeah, well said mate. People read far to much into this and if they had listened to the dialogue at the start, then all would be explained. Great film.

reply

omg can't believe people have nothing better to do than to read too much into movies but certainly not too much time listening to the dialog in the movie...lol but yeah this is one great movie and I am very glad to own it on DVD!

No, I agree, it's possible that there is a subtle hint of homosexuality between Brandon and Jim, I never thought of this but it makes sense. I watched this weekend and picked up on a line that seemed very strange to me. When Brandon approached Jim at the construction site and Jim tells Brandon that the symptoms that Linda is experiencing are symptoms of pregnancy, Brandon tells Jim that he doesn't even love her, he (Jim) will walk away from Linda when he tires of her, he walked away from Medical school, he walked away from his parents and Brandon then stops short of telling Jim he walked away from him (Brandon). A strange statement between two men. So I find this thread very telling and this take quite interesting!! Remember this was the 80's and things were not quite in the open like today.

reply

OMG take a joke people, we're talking about Witchboard, not Citizen Kane.

reply

I disagree...men can love each other and not have to be homosexual about it. It was stated by BOTH men at different times in the movie that they were like brothers. So, when Jim walked away from Brandon it was like a brother abandoning him..not a lover.

Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

reply

leave it to the level-headed to shout from the rooftops that they weren't really gay...OF COURSE they weren't..which makes the thread that much funnier

reply

Saw it for the first time at age 18 and I also caught the gay vibe.

...just sayin'...

I know, eh?

"I have to overreact to this suggestion, or someone might think I'm gay for noticing!!!"

Gee whiz.

reply

HEY! That 22 of yours? I'm seeing two guys spooning.

reply

Just caught a screening last night. Had never seen it before and I TOTALLY thought what the OP thought. That kind of substitution happens all the time. When there is a mutual conflict (Linda) between two men, or two women, it is usually symbolic of a relationship.

When will you ever learn, this feeling is all you can discern?

reply

let's just leave Vampire Circus to his erotic fantasy shall we ? He obviously doesn't have an ounce of originality in his entire body - just look at his nick to begin with - real original stud lol.

reply

Call me crazy, but the idea of a subliminal bisexual love triangle involving a gay man sounds awesome to me, especially when both the guys are closets. However, I do not think that the friendship between the girl & the "ex-whatever" is appropriate. That's just me.
