Ahh, great melody indeed. That is Vladimir Vysotsky. The song is called "unruly horses", "Koni priveredlivye" in Russian. You can find the translated lyrics, pronunciation, original Russian text AND two real player files with the same song at this website

Enjoy it! I had a heck of a time finding that song on the internet.

I think that is the wrong piece, that is the piece when he is at the kirov and he dances in front of Galina while she is crying. The piece that i think is being asked about is the piece where he has just left Galina's office after she has told him where the Americans will meet him and he tries to do a few movements but just stops, he switches on the lights of the theatre then turns them off again. Is that what is happening while the piece that you want is playing in the background? I think that piece is great too, it is instrumental with no words. So if anyone knows it, let me know!!!

I believe the melody you're referring to is "Emmanuel" by the late Michel Colombier. There is an audio file on his Web site. http://www.michelcolombier.com/home.htm

I hope this helps.

As the above-listed site is a bit hard to navigate, here is the link to hear or download a tiny portion of the song to make sure this is the one you want.
[Hopefully helpful] shortcuts to find this on CD at Amazon:

OR

...otherwise, just search for Michel Colombier Emmanuel

or for Michel Colombier Wings [the name of the album].

While we're on the subject, anyone know what the song Nikolai is playing on the piano before he does the 11 pirouettes is?

reply

That's a different song, not the one he is looking for. It starts on the TV when Kolya is talking to Galina in the office, then continues to a piano/orchestral piece as he dances for the last time on stage alone. I'm trying to find this song as well.
