Odd Comment Heard on DVD Extras

I saw this movie for the first time the other day.

The director said that he'll always see White Nights as a tribute to Gregory Hines and went on to say that Hines didn't tell anyone he was sick, and all of a sudden, he was gone.

"Wow," I thought. He was sick during this movie and this was his last film? Yes, what a tribute!" Then I came on here to see that White Nights was released in 1985 and Mr. Hines was making movies pretty much up until his death in 2003.

So what a bone-headed thing for the director of White Nights to say. Gregory Hines was a fantastic actor and much more than just ONE movie.

Perhaps you misunderstood the intent here.

That DVD came out in 2006 and Hines died in 2003, so I assumed the commentary was recorded after Hines had passed and the director was simply remembering Hines and how he died so suddenly without anyone knowing he was sick beforehand. Not sure how you can take offense to that, especially if the director views such a great film as White Nights as a 'tribute' to such a great (and greatly missed) actor.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

Yes, I'm sure that you are correct. Taylor Hackford was just commenting on how to the very end Gregory Hines did not draw attention upon himself because of illness but instead kept working (as noted in the OP). The comments were clearly made after Hines had died.

However, tt was noted that Nat Kong Cole did much the same while making "Cat Ballou" and actually died months before the film was released. Charleton Heston noted that Edward G. Robinson didn't tell anybody that he was ill and dying when shooting "Soylent Green"...and I'm sure that there are other similar stories.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

he couldn't be sick for over 20 years before he died
