Confused

I recently saw this movie for the first time, and absolutely loved it, but two minor things really confused me. First, why were Nikolai and Raymond practicing together? (And living together?) They both did completely different styles of dance. Shouldn't Nikolai have been practicing with a ballet company, since the KGB wanted him to perform at opening night? Second, how did Nikolai, Raymond, and Darya tape the fake argument that helped them escape? They were being watched and bugged constantly. Surely someone would have realized what was going on. Again, I know this is nitpicking, but it took me out of the movie a little bit, so I'm curious if anyone has answers.

Why did I write? Because I found life unsatisfactory.
