Why does Jim throw the teacup in the bin?

Any ideas? Why is that?

confusion, radiation sickness?

I was curious about that too... My best guess is that he wanted to dispose of any objects in the house after use, thinking them to be contaminated or something.

It's because they're not able to clean their dishes. Notice the ever-growing pile of dirty dishes in the sink? It's meant to be a bit of comedy: he can't be bothered to add it to the pile, so cuts corners when his wife's back is turned.

I always attributed it to the cognitive impairment of radiation sickness-- much like his confusion of the Germans and the Russians.

I think you're reading a little to much into this movie, remember, it is meant to be a (blacker than black) comedy after all.

As for the German/Russians confusion, I'd just put that down to old age.

One does not preclude the other, you know.

But you remember how he had no trouble telling Russians and Germans apart, then suddenly started confusing the two, once the bombs fell. The movie got all the other symptoms of radiation poisoning right- headache, fever, nausea, diarrhea, hair loss, etc. Confusion and loss of cognitive ability is one of the symptoms as well, so it stands to reason they would include it.
