Different ending????????????

I used to have this on tape that was recorded off tv (i think it was on channel 4) in the early 90's. I recently bought the dvd and it is the first time i've watched it in nearly 20 years.
Anyway the ending i remember very clearly was that the woman went upstairs and died and her husband was left alone in the house, does anyone know of this ending because i remember it so well. Maybe the tv version had a different end?
Please help

I watched it at about the same time I think, on C4 but the ending was the same as you probabily have on the DVD (and the book) wasn't the way you remember it. So not sure if there was an alt. ending.
