Rating?

What's this rated for? If it was released today, what would it be rated?

Thoughts become actions, actions become habits, and habits determine our character.

Twice the film shows a guy shooting himself through his mouth; the second time in slow motion. There is blood spatter on the wall, but no "gore" (no visible open wound or brain spatter). Oh, later on Vanessa Redgrave scrapes her calf.

There is one shot where they show a nipple's aureole, and a couple of shots of nipples through a skimpy shirt.

That's about it; no memorable naughty language. Maybe just over the edge of PG-13; a very light R.

In addition to the episodes described upthread, there is also a flashback scene in which a character, is seized from behind and his throat cut. It's like the scene mentioned above where the other character shoots himself in the mouth -- you see a quick slash & some bright red gore but then scene ends -- by current standards (2007) not very graphic.

I would not worry too much about ratings, since nobody under 17 is going to sit still for more than 10 minutes for this film. It is far too slow, too subtle, too thoughtful -- in sum, too adult. No pat endings, a lot of talk, a bunch of screwed up adults with no resolution of their problems in sight. Real life, in other words.
