but he did ghost busters at the time, so it's ok. i'd like to live in an alternate universe where murray was able to do both, ghost busters first, then this.

You're kidding, right? Murray is talented but he'd never would have been able to pull off being a believable twenty one year old freshly graduated from college circa 1985. He looked much older than Hanks did by then.
Murray was 34-35 when this was made and looked it. Hanks was 28-29 and looked like he was still in high school.
Murray would have been too un-sympathetic and arrogant compared to Hanks who at least has some charm to his acting. Just look at Murray in Stripes, total *beep* to everyone and everything. He's mellow out in the last 10 years but just barely.
