Is Turk an acronym for anything?

I ask this out of curiosity after listening to Rod Stewart's "Young Turks." First thing I thought of was this film. Unable to find a copy I'm resorting to the message board.

Any help would be appreciated.

Turk, I believe in this instance - the movie - is sort of a reference to a Turkish warrior.

i don't know about back then. nowadays turk refers to a thug. perhaps this movie started it.

Correction dudes,
'Turk' is often referred to as tough men who know no fear and are brave men. Generally a Turkish characteristic, which was applied to this young lad's older brother.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen this film!!!!!! Here in the UK, it was never released on video let alone on DVD!!!!!

Check the trivia listed on this board:

The "Turk 182" tag is loosely inspired by the real-life tag of "TAKI 183," one of New York City's first and most famous graffiti writers.

It wasn't an acronym. In the movie Turk was a nickname for his brother (the hurt firefighter he was avenging) and 182 was his firefighter number. I don't remember if they said why or how he got the nickname though.

reply

The whys and hows to the nickname of the brother (it just ended on Encore) are because the older firefighters said he reminded him of a "young Turk" (like the poster above mentioned- brave and shows no fear).

As for Rod Stewart's song, it had nothing to do with this movie. In fact, if I recall, he never says the words "young Turks" in the lyrics.

182 was his brothers badge number. I'm a NYC Fireman, and a kid who i came on the job with got assigned badge number 182.

I think you're right about that, mdabear. It is based off of 'Taki 183' so much so because that kid was doing a lot to spread and leave his name around NYC in the early 70s.

reply

Most firefighters get or have nicknames.

I am only here because they blocked my MySpace at work. Asses.

I think the movie just made up the name turk182..since its loosely based on a real graffiti writer Taki 183, and no one knew what taki meant back then. I think it was a nickname giving to him by his mom or just his real name, and the number comes from taki's address on 183rd street in New York

Less than 10 minutes on the Internet using a search engine would have cleared this up.

The question was asked long ago; searches were harder then - did you notice one guy talked about MySpace? These were the dark ages, my friend!
